I'm french canadian, you pronounce "who die" or "who dye", you choose "aille" in french is pronounced "i" Hope this little french class helped you!
LOL...I don't see smilies...so you're seriously telling a French speaking person of direct French descent how to pronounce a French word? In the ad someone posted, in small print it says "Pronounced Hoo-dye". Good enough for me!
We have a business here in Charlotte called Carolina Houdaille that carries hard to find automotive hardware for restorers. They have been in business for over 50 years and are legendary to hot rodders and restorers in this area. They pronounce it "who dally".
Frank I was just going to say that. Been to Carolina Houdaille a bunch of times. Back in 1976 , I could go in there and buy inside door handles headlight rings etc, for my 48 Chevy. It was a neat place. Full of old aftermarket style parts. Had a cat eyes lense display if I remember correctly. Thanks Frank.
Hackerbilt - Thanks for noticing ... I was beginning to lose faith in my fellow HAMBers' ability to "click thumbnails to enlarge" ...
Really depends on what part of the country you're in. Finally using my much-ridiculed French skills (Dad told me to take Spanish) I asked for directions to Lenoir at a local gas station. Pronounced it "LEN-WAH-R". Mrs. Hampton would've been so proud. Looked at me as if I just parked a UFO. "Ya'll mean LEN-ORR?" Haven't heard it pronounced proper once, not even on the news.
Call this guy and ask him.. This is where the history on houdaille ends.. There are photos in the store to prove it.. The guy who runs it is about 80, they sell aftermarket auto fasteners and accessories in the wilkinson area of charlotte Nc Carolina Houdaille Address: 1914 West Morehead Street, Charlotte, NC 28208 Phone: (704) 333-6669 Transit: Morehead St & Millerton Ave
For the last 10 years or so I have been expecting to find them closed when going there to try to find a clip or screw no one else has. The owner died about 10 years ago at about age 90 (he was there every day) and the only employee the place has ever had is as the last post said about 80. I have NEVER been there when he was not there (if he would get sick no one else can run it). The family of the only owner still owns it and tells the counter guy when he quits it WILL close. Those of us who have been a customer for 50 or more years will hate to see that day come.
My dad went in and bought a bunch of his chevy stuff back in the seventies at Carolina Houdaille. Lots of vent shades , some of those little eye brows for 55 Chevys. I remember the old guy that ran the place. My grandparents didn't live to far from the place. Went by it all the time.
Asking a Canadian for a proper french pronunciation is like asking a hillbilly for a proper English pronunciation (or a Swiss for a German pronunciation) haha...
No shit.. It will be sad.. The guy is real helpful and like able.. Wants like 4 k for that pos 85 cutlass.. I wish he had someone who worked there that would take it over.. Sad
They had a plant in Buffalo NY, in early 60's....People I knew, who worked there, all called it "Who-die" . Just my 2cents...... 4TTRUK
