Ran across an ad on cl for an old race car. Looking at the pictures that were posted and it looks like a rear end housing was used as a column. Was this common or are my eys deceiving me?

  2. That's friggin great. Use what you have, it's probably tough as hell too. Is that a '34 Ford?

neat. Looks like it might be a rearend out of an old import.

  4. Yeah for sure, and old Datsun or Toyota rearend maybe.

  5. I don't know about everywhere, but it was pretty common here in N. Tex.
Used to see it a lot in garage built dirt cars. Tough as hell, and a pretty good steering advantage.

nevermind, I was saying pic #1 was too small :)

edit, what's the rear end in the car. Looks like big wide five racecar rear, I bet.

please explain, how did this tie into front steering arm ????

  13. Just like any other steering box, with some kind of pitman arm and a drag link. Most likely homeade also.

Brilliant Redneck Engineering, lock the spiders for normal steering or lock the "dead axle only" for quick ratio steering!!

I vote this for tech week :D

  15. now that's what i call "rear steer".:D

  16. Seen plenty of figure-8 cars of that era... never saw anything like that.
