holley 600 issues!!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by n847, May 13, 2012.

  1. I read on the holley site that the vacuum secondaries will only open while under a load and not just by reving up the engine while stopped. They said to clip a paper clip on the diaphram rod and push it up against the housing; then take it for a good ride. When finished, if the secondaries opened, the clip will be pushed down the rod and you can tell if they opened and how far they are opening.

You guys just said the same thing I did... LoL at least where on the same page....

The proper way to set up a Holley, is with a vacuum guage. So you get a reading at idle, then do the math, and pick a PV... Then you take it for a ride get a cruising vacuum.... Idle Vacuum, and dead punch, and how far down the vacuum goes when you punch while cruising.....

The pick the color spring that best fits the vacuum range.... then take her out and try it.... and then try 1 up and 1 down.... to see what the engine responds best too....

usually averaging out, and going a little stronger on average, will get you the best drivability and performance gain....

I'm gonna have to borrow a better/smaller vacuum gage and tape it to my windshield and try that!

I saw the stuff on the Holley website last night about the paper clip, I'll be trying that tonight!

Its not unusual for the outer ring on the harmonic balencer to turn on the inner part. My Z/28 race car was off 10 degrees when I degreed it in. That will cause a lot of problems that will seem carb related. Just something to think about

Just be carefull... ussually its a 2 man job, one driving and one recording. You dont have to drive fast, you are more concerned at low rpm when engine is building, and so is vacuum, the drive at say 30 mph and punch it recording the reading to 45 or 50 mph no faster...

What you ultimatelyy want to acheive is, the secondarys stay closed until the engine builds vacuum to open them, the vacuum is built by rpms, and thus the need for more fuel, which creates more HP and TQ... Its a circle...

Stopped at a dead punch, your vacuum will drop to zero, this is why you have an accelerator pump, since at that specific moment, your engine doesnt have the ability to suck gas, through the venturies.

Idealy but not always acheived it. An idle vacuum of about 16 to 17 psi, and a punch vacuum drop to 5 PSI

    White - Lightest
    Yellow (Short Spring)
    Yellow
    Purple
    Plain (Steel grey)
    Brown
    Black - Heaviest

If there is a bog or hesitation when the secondaries open, the spring tension is too light, go to the next heavier spring.

Note the spring you took out, and how it drove, that will give you a starting point.

I am long winded, hahaha.... Trying to give out all necessary info in my brain... on a thread....

I have a vacuum pump gage, could I use that to pull vacuum and see if the secondaries open?

the lines didnt match up but the low rpm is initial, and the high is full... I just stumbled on this, and it may help you factor in with vacuum readings

OK took a drive and the secondaries are opening, and it moved the clip a good portion of the way down the shaft. Does any one know what spring they come with from the factory, just out of curiosity! The car ran great around town for about a half hour.
