Hot Rods Anybody running a single 2 barrel?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by studearch, May 18, 2012.

  1. I'm curious if anybody is running a single two barrel on their SBC, SBF, or SB Mopars? I'm considering keeping the 2bbl. on a 283, Turbo 350 combo in a lightweight, highway cruiser type rod for economy, mileage, simplicity.
I don't need to go fast or do burnouts, just get to the events and back without going broke. Any experiences, ideas ? Thanks.

  2. Why not? Hundred of thousands of cars rolled off the assembly line with V8's and 2 barrel carbs. Since you don't need the extra airflow for power, the 2 barrel should work just fine. BTW, you can gett he same mileage with a 4 barrel if you keep your foot out of it. Especially with a vacuum secondary, it does not flow until you have the throttle wide open and enough demand by the engine.

As long as you plan on keeping the hood closed no one will know. There are some possible advantages to the 2 bbl and if you have no need for any more power why change.

I've run tri-power with just the center carb functioning, no prob, and of course lots of new cars in the 50's - 60's with a 2 bbl. I have one on my '27 roadster now, but its a 4 cyl Mercruiser!

  5. I have a 2bbl on my 65 dart 273 v8 it works great and I get23 mi/gal .My other car gets 7mi/gal.

hottub02.jpg tuboflo01.jpg WARNING: PEOPLE WHO HATE FAKES AND FAUX STUFF AVERT YOUR GAZE:

I'm using a 2G Rochester on my tub - but I added two bogus 2Gs for a tri-power look - all turned backwards so the bowls clear the front mounted distributor.

Cost of cast iron 2V SBF intake: $5
    Rochester 2GC carb $5
    Aluminum paint: $5
    Carb gold paint: $5
    Mics fittings: $8

    Total less air clnrs: $28

Runs great w 4.11 posi and T&C toploader wide ratio
Plenty fast for this old hoodlum.

Run the 2-bbl, I guess...Just heard on the news that everybody's gay now anyway.

(or it's O.K. if they are, or some such)

I find 4barrel Q-Jets get better mpg than any 2barrels. An amp for the distributor is good too for better mpg like a CRANE "Fireball".

  9. I have run lots of small blocks with 2 bbls on them. They worked just fine.

I run them on 2 off topic rigs. A 500 cfm Holley on a 350 Chevy, and a 350 cfm on a 305. I would have stayed with the Rochester on the 305, but it had been modified by the previous owner, and was not working well at all.
I've run 2 Ford 302's with the stock version and gotten about 20 mpg on the highway. Switching to a 4 bbl Holley dropped this by about 2 mpg. But then my foot was a lot heavier back then, than it is today. Around town there was little difference between them. However on the high end on things the 4bbl made a difference.
If you can believe what K+N says, using their aircleaner with a 500 cfm Holley can produce 420 horsepower, with the right stuff on everything else.
Also I think, that the runners on the old 283 and 307's were smaller than the ones on the 350's and 305's. If that is true, then low speed performance might be better.

A single 2 barrel will run just fine........ If you have the 2 barrel run it.

If you are looking for the same or maybe even better mileage with more power when you need it, you could run a spread bore 4 barrel with vacuum secondaries. You could easily spend most of your time running on what is basically and even smaller 2 barrel. Set the vacuum secondaries so it takes a little more than normal to open them and you can keep them from opening unless you really put you foot in it.

Just my 2 cents......... Probably all its worth too!

God bless the little 283/2bbl with the manual choke = stupid-proof.

...and remember, a 283/2bbl will produce the same180 hp that a $10,000 worked over flathead produces, for a quarter of the cost...

If a two barrel will do,then do it. How about a 2 barrel on an inline 6 instead of the usual two carbs.Works quite well after some tuning to the off idle fuel circuit

I run one on my 289. it's okay, but don't do it for economy. You are better off running a 4bbl.. remember it's only a 4bbl when you have it mashed to the floor. Any old time mechanic will tell you the same. If ya got 4 leave 'em be. Switching will not give you what you want. Some day I'll swap my 2 for a small 4 like a 600.

  16. I ran a holley 500cfm two barrel on a Ford FE 390 w/11.0:1 compression and headers....had a toploader 4speed close ratio and a 3.92:1 rear gear......this was an awesome combination !!!...through the gears, it was scary fast !!!...but by 5,000rps or so it started to starve for fuel....but around town and on the hiway, it was a stellar performer...17mpgs, too......1952 Ford F1 pickup....wow! what a ride !!!

I run the Caddie of two barrels on my Track T, the Autolite 2100 two barrel. It starts up instantly, the choke works great and it will blaze the tires easily. No one seems to notice since it is bolted to a four barrel intake.

Holley 4412 is a 500cfm carb and there are lots of them out there. IIRC there is a class of dirt track racing that runs these.

If you are lucky and know what to look for the Holley 6425 is the ultimate 2bbl performance carb. The we're made in the 70s for AHRA , 600cfm and if they have the option chrome stacks they are 650cfm.

I'm running just a single 2 barrel in our 37 Chevy truck with a 389 Pontiac. It gets around 17 mpg if you keep your foot out of it. Witch is hard to do.

My '62 Hawk has a Stromberg 2 barrel. I found a local guy (TMP Carbs) that has tuned it and it runs really well now.

    My buddy had a 68 Olds 88 with a 455 and a two barrel. That motor was a torque-monster!

built a 351 windsor for my daughter's mach 1. Went to a speed shop and bought a 2 bbl. holley off the shelf, didn't know anything about it. That thing would blow any sbc i had off the street, later found out the carb flowed almost 400 cfm. Had to retard the timing 10 degrees for her, but when i drove it i put it back--. Great performance and mileage.

Brazwell got their hands on a few and made 700cfm. Holley put a stop to that pretty soon but I ended up with 3. The stacks were straight without a step and all were annular discharge… DE090FFB-7A56-4C4C-838B-B6BA3D8CEE4F.jpeg 7263ACBB-E43E-4BF4-B644-E3C1954AB7F3.jpeg 76AF6128-1076-4EEE-96FA-2E5846749BB8.jpeg
