First time under it's own power

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by no6, May 15, 2012.

  1. First time out under it's own power today, the motor has some lifter noise I am not happy about and I will have to get a smaller steering wheel, other than that it drove OK.

Love that color too. And I second the cloth plug wires - adds a whole heapin' of Old School to it.

Pull the motor???Lifter noise coming from the oil pan:)?
Or you have to pull the motor for the steering wheel swap?

  14. I am afraid the cam and lifters are junk, I got a new reground cam and lifters, my machinist said every time he tried to adjust the lifters it would be out of adjustment by several thousands, he thought he finally got it. He likes to grind the valve stem instead of the Johnson adj. lifters. I respect his knowledge being an older gentleman and down this road a few times but he has never came across this problem.

Nice car! It's a great feeling when your car moves under its own strength, and a horrible feeling to have to take it back apart right after it was finally working. Good luck tracking down that noise!

Nothing like that first ride, no matter how many times you have done it. Nice looking coupe you have there.

The engine in my 27 has been in and out 3 times to fix a persistent rear seal drip, so I know your pain. The only good part is, you know what wrenches to take with you after doing it a few times.

  18. I would recomend adjustable lifters. Drill an 1/8" hole in the each lifter bore it makes adjustment a snap. Last flathead i built was 1956.
