I'm on the hunt for a couple of original Chevy II 153 four banger valve covers that have the name "CHEVY" embossed on the top...yep, I need two of them.

My question is...what years did they have the word "CHEVY" (not Chevrolet) embossed on them? I have found several Chevy II valve covers that have no name at all...plain.

I'm wondering if Chevy did with the 4 banger valve covers like they did with the V8 valve covers and stopped putting the name on them in 1968?...so maybe I'm looking for a pre '68 valve cover?...what say you?

AND IF ANY OF YOUSE GUYS HAVE ANY...LET ME KNOW...purdy please

hey look at that! I've never seen one in thier natural habitat.

  3. I seem to remember them saying "Chevy" in '62. I wonder (and definitely don't know for sure) if the ones with no name are from the Mercruiser Marine and Industrial engines?

The mercruiser 153 and 181 had an alloy valve cover with shallow ribs and a flat spot that had a Mercruiser sticker. This is the Mercruiser calve cover in my Chevy II midget. This one is powder coated but the original is black.

Add me to that list. I had a buddy in Viet Nam from Kansas or some other flat state in that area that bragged about the one he had but in the past 45 years I don't ever remember seeing one actually in the car.

I never saw production records on how many were actually built with four bangers either.

    :DHello
I have one early valve cover that says Chevy not Chevrolet, don't know what year they changed to unmarked.

  7. I love 'em Larry- have one tucked away for a future project, but I don't have an answer for you about the the "Chevy" cover. Might be easiest to ask over at Nat'l Nostalgic Nova. If Wayne is still running the club, he'd have the answer in his head.

Hey Larry, I have no idea on the valve cover. I did find something you might like this week though. We rented a JLG man lift and I found this under the side pod. A Vortec 181 Chevy Banger. It says 3.0 but we all know that means 181...:D

How about that intake and cast header? Get rid of the top half of the intake and it looks like 97's will bolt right on.... 3 bolt flange and it even has the triangle mount we all know. If not, it would be real close.

    Here's the pics.

The valve cover on mine is a "64 (to the best of my knowledge) and has the script.

I don't know much at all about these little 4 cylinder engines other than I've heard they're pretty bulletproof. Are they basically the same as the old inline 6 with a couple of cylinders missing?

    No. 230, not 194.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean high-jack this thread. Can we return to the subject of the valve covers for these engines?

    Do the math. 2/3 of 230 c.i. = 153 c.i. , 2/3 of 194 c.i. = 129c.i.

Funny, I've been looking for a pair for a little bit myself.

I thought they'd make a neat alternative to the Chevrolet-script V8 because they already have provisions for PCV so you could run them on a later engine.

...the 153/4 and 194/6 were first introduced in 1962 Chevy II lineup. 230/6 wasn't introduced until 1963. How could the 153 be patterned after an engine not even made yet?
It sounds more like the 230/6 was patterned after the 153/4.

The 153 may have been introduced 1 year before the 230, but you can be sure they existed on the "drawing board" at the same time. Regardless of which came first in the showroom, the point remains that the 153 is based on the 230 bore-stroke dimensions, not those of those 194 as asserted in a prior post.
