first manual car you ever drove?

i have never had an automatic transmission in my 13 cars i have owned and my 14th car have a 5 speed manual, i don't like automatic, two pedals are very confusing

 

1948 Frazer. Took my road test in it in 1955.

 

A friend of my dad used to race dirt track stock cars back when I was in high school and I used to go to the races with them on the weekends and help them out. One day he told me "Go get the car off the trailer" and I told him that I didnt know how to drive manual and that I will burn up the clutch. He said "So!! If you do Ill just put a new one in it!!" Well I did get the car down and into the shop and what a thrill that was.

 

Believe it or not... My 53 Chevy! haha Man I'll never forget that night, it was awesome. Got it back from doing the exhaust and drove it home that night! Stalling in the intersection was a memory... haha! Didn't help that the shifter was all losse and messed up and couldnt tell the difference between 1st and 3rd haha! But it's all fixed now! Time fo the 4 on the floor with the v8!

Same day a Plymouth arrow then a 70 Cuda 340 4/speed. Obviously the the later was a little more fun.

 

I learned to drive in my Dads 1966 GTO convertible 400 with a muncie 4 spd.
All that torque made it easy to get the timing of clutch to throttle down so i didn't kill it leaving from a stop but I may have spun the tires a few times.

 

My first manual drive wasn't a car.... it was a 1980 Cabover Freightliner.
Dad had a trucking company and I had to learn how to drive the trucks from the lot over to the shop to service and wash them. I was 13 when my Dad had me do this....

I learned to drive in a 1950 Nash,American wagon!! Best part was the clutch was worn out so it was hard to stall!!!! ROY.

35 ford with 289/4 speed. had a trusting dad who started teaching me to drive a stick in it!

 

A way way off topic 1983 Nissan Pulsar.

 

My first manual drive was in my Dad's Dodge pickup (mid 80's or so). I had a '69 El Camino at the time (auto) that I was working on one weekend. My parents were out somewhere in Mom's car, couldn't get a hold of any of my friends, and needed to run to the parts store. Dad's truck was just sitting there, so I said "how hard can it be?". I understood the basic concept of a manual trans, so I hopped in and away I went! Mom couldn't understand how I could just hop in like that and drive a stick. Since that time, most of my cars have been manual trans.

 

First manual vehicle I drove was my '59 Cushman 3 wheeler (3 on the tree) ungraded from the golf cart when I was about 4yrs old. (very trusting grandparents) then I went to my grandpa's '79 Ford granny low farm truck. The first car I had legally on the road when I got my licences was my '50 Desoto, but it was a "fluid drive" not really an auto or a manual but both at the same time. The first thing I had with a (working) automatic was my '50 Chevy pickup when I dropped an junkyard 305 and a th350 in it. (Back in the 90's when you could still get a used running smallblock)

 

My Dads five year old 55 chevy wagon, 265, four barrel, 411 gears with an overdrive. He ordered it from the dealer and we drove it all over the country at high speeds!.... I drove it into a ditch.

 

I grew up driving Farmall tractors and Dodge automatics, one day the band director asked me to move his car from the teachers' lot cuz the county was about to tar the road...luckily nobody saw me downshift into 1st at the speedbump in the students' lot as that '84 Ford EXP bounced all kinds of funny

Me and the sis shared an '82 Mercury Cougar (see Ford Fairmont), but then I got a '86 Dodge Omni when she graduated HS...didja know them things can only do 12 burnouts before ya have to replace the clutch? OOPS

and the first eye-opener was a cowpoke's '73 GMC 3/4 ton with a 454-4spd I had to put tires on at a summer job...dang near needed both feet to push that clutch pedal in, as the seat was down to the springs and stuck all the way back

 

'32 ford 3 window. I was 11, and have been screwed up ever since.

The first manual I drove was a 1974 Vw super beetle.

 

Drove a farm tractor from age six on and a 1949 Dodge Coronet at age 10.

 

I actually hate to even admit it but when I was 14 I stole a 1962 Chevy Impala 2dr ht with a column shift. Learned how to drive it in 30 sec. hit a parked car as I made a 90 deg corner out of a parking lot trying to crank the big steering wheel back straight. I was on the run with my gf. We evaded the popo for about two weeks before we got busted an hauled to JC. Man, stupid kid stuff but what a memory...

 

An old style VW panned sandrail complete wiht 40 horse engine. i couldn't have asked for a better car to learn on.

 

My Dad's old 68 Chevy 1 ton with a granny 4 speed. Best thing to learn in, it would start in granny if you forgot it was a stick! Taught a lot of people in that old truck!

My first manual trans vehicle was a three wheel cushman ice cream cart converted to a front flatbed for use on a farm, I was 9 years old and drove that thing every summer till I was 12. The first real street legal car with a manual trans was my best friends 54 Merc 2 door sedan. He had me drive on a rainy night, on city streets and on the new Interstate 8 freeway in San Diego when it was only two lanes each way.
