I've brought home some crazy projects, but my friend took the cake here.

Look what he drug home;





It's a 1963 Mack B81 with a 711 Mack Turbo Diesel.

He had it hauled home from Philly yesterday, and last night after work we got it started. Sprayed some PB into the turbo, and broke the compressor loose with a screwdriver. Put two batteries in it and it started up on ether.

He has no real use for it, doesn't have a CDL, and doesn't really have a good place to keep it. Sounds like something I would do.

 

You know, the more I look at the cab, the more I like it. The cab has a really good shape to it. That is one heck of a project though.

 

They could have come with a much nicer, rounded nose on the lighter duty models. For some reason he prefers this more bare-bones nose of the heavier models.

 

Those are cool. There is a nice one here in my home town. I always enjoy seeing it!

 

Wow, There is not one light weight part on that truck. Very cool though.

 

Here is the nose I like. They are very nice trucks. His looks like it belongs in a horror movie.

A Mack truck in Allentown? Sounds like a perfect fit to me. Big Ass Trucks rule!

 

The old B series Mack's are one of the sweetest looking vintage tractors there are in my opinion. That is cool that he is gonna save it!

 

Yeah I told him he should drop it off at the corporate headquarters and tell them to give it the ol' once over.

 

Made me think of this project I saw a couple years ago.

 

Done up right the B-81 is one cool looking truck. When I was running to the Bronx every day there was one that had been restored with the frame lengthened and a sleeper added, hauling a drop bottom trailer for stone. This thing had 2, 8 inch straight stacks and would flat haul ass. As long as he's into the work, that's one hell of a cool ride....

 

Cool, reminds me of the log trucks that we had at the mill when I was in high school.

I didn't get a good look at the rear is it a twin screw? (both axles drive)

 

One of the round fendered models restored and being shown at an ag equipment show in Washington state last fall.

I think he hauled a vintage farm tractor in with it and stuck the truck in the show too.

Back when I was in high school there were a number of Mack logging trucks that went by our house either headed to the woods or headed to the mill with a load of logs. That beast that was shown in post 1 could look pretty good all slicked out in factory color or in the color from some trucking company from that era.

 

Back in 1982&83 I drove a B61 Dump truck that my father-in-law had. It had the 711 eng with a 20 spd Quad box. I really liked driving it. It was painted 1956 Olds festval red with a black box.

Good to know it will be saved. Reminds me of Mad Max-Beyond Thunderdome with the Mack B running on rails.

Very cool car hauler! Not sure I'd run it much on ether, not much lubricant in ether.

 

Cool old Mack, but I would have thought you'd blow the head off with all that starting fluid. LOL

I belonged to the local chapter of the Antique Truck Assn. of America for ten years & these guys haul these rusted hulks home like they were scooters. A lot of times, they can get them cheap or for free because nobody has the interest, time or space to deal with them. They are also proficient in moving very large things that nobody else has the means, guts or knowledge to do.

 

I'm about to head over there again after dinner. We are going to try to get it to suck fuel.

 

Easy on the starting fluid. If it won't run on its own, something is up with the pump or the fuel filter. Diesel fuel is meant to lubricate. Ether has none of that and can cause major damage.

Watch that ether and or gas soaked rag for cold start or priming, they are dang lucky that this one would shut down even after the rag got sucked into the engine!
