Typically yes, but with an overdrive in the 70% range, it would be like a 3.60 final ratio . . completely streetable.
Based on this link http://www.hot-rod-garage.com/articles/hot-rod-gears.cfm 28" tall tires = 4000 rpms @ 65 if I did the math right.
A 5.14 gear with a 28 inch tall tire will have the engine spinning at 3800 rpm at 60 mph. You decide! Also add a couple hundred RPM's if you are running an automatic for converter slippage.
What spline axles do you have, 28 spline should be pretty easy to find another pumpkin. I have 3.90's in my off topic truck with 33 inch tall tires, but reduces down to a 3.23 when compared to a 28 inch tall tire.
Yeah, those are way too deep. I'm running 4.30's with a 30 inch tire and am cranking 3,000 at 60 mph. I love them around town but anything over 50 mph is not so hot. I ran 5.13's in a 64 Chevy but took them out REAL quick because I couldn't hear myself think over the engine revs. Don
I ran a 5.38 rear in a Chevy C30 with 17.5" wheels and tall tires, was wound up by the time I got to 55. So a 5.14 is not much better, see if you can make a trade with someone who runs the 1/8th mile. Bob
IN THE 70'S We all ran low gears 4.56 4.88 5.13's it was normal in my daily driver at the time a 1965 chevelle I ran 4.88's even in winter with snow tires at 60mph on the highway, now with overdrives it would be easier
If you have any drag strips or dirt tracks around where you live , that would be a good place to sell them . You might be able to get someone to swap you a ring and pinion for your gear set . Will make a good gear for a 1/8th mile track as well . I have run 4.56 on the street with a 4 speed toploader before but didn't use it on the highways . It was a street car for the weekend only ! Sometimes during the week if the money was right ! So what trans and engine are you running ? Retro Jim
The Rear came out of a circle track car, that was a good deduction. I want something that could do double duty, street and strip.
Double duty street or strip usually gives you the worst of both worlds not the Best. You get a street car that is kinda moody and doesnt like to go get groceries or icecream really gets everyone cranky on a long trip. You get a strip car that all the other real strip cars make fun of.
4.56 and up are 'fun' gears to impress your friends, but not too realistic for street use on a regular basis. (tall tires & OD not withstanding)
Thats way too low. The amount of gas it drinks will get old quick. I say if you are going to use a 30" tire go with 4.10s and with a 28" tire go with 3.73s. But I dont know what you are doing whit your 9". Trucks usually have the lower gears and the big sedans have the higher gears.
The tall gears were good for getting your desired overall gear ratio, which determined the RPM you'd turn at a particular track. Most of us ran 3-speeds so it was an eternal search for that 2nd gear and rear that produced the optimum RPM. Bob
We (Ford guys) changed the chunk and fine tuned with different size tires for each track. The Chevy guys changed trans for each track. Everyone was happy when they allowed QC. The OP could easily sell the 5.14 to a circle track guy.
I ran a Ford rear under my Nova.. made it real easy to pop in a new gear set when going elsewhere to race. Bob
