I finally got 4 blown up Allisons JB Welded back together for display motors for the Quad Al. This is just test fitting but I thought I would share. There is a long way to go. View attachment 1618341 View attachment 1618342 I have had the chassis about 18 years and blown up engines for a couple of years
I remember seeing photo of that thing doing a burnout or making a pass that looked like a burnout. When I worked part time in a parts house in the evenings I sold a ton of JB Weld.
Here ya go! http://www.dragracingonline.com/nowthen/viii_8-1.html Love this, so glad to see it coming together!
Okay, so that answers it, because the articals i have on it seemed to insist that it was going to run and i heard it never ran. Someone needs to loan this guy a handful of motors, and i'm sure there are more people like me with machining skills and tool that wanta see this run!!!
For as much as i care about dragsters, none, i'd love to see that thing blast the strip. I love the design of early dragsters and the crazyness of the late 50s and early 60s one, up until the 70s funnycars. But other than liking the design and attitude i knopw shit. THIS THING RULES! real shame money killed it
The first comment fits the best....... "Holy Crap" Very cool. I only saw it one time as a kid at Irwindale Raceway, and of course many times in the magazines. Very inovative, very cool. Keep it going. Mike
Awesome!!! As much as i would like to see it run, i would REALLY like to HEAR it run!!!! Where is it goin when it is finished???? (museum, collection,,,, TRACK????)
I bought the body of Big Al 1 from Jim Lytle. When I was negotiating with him he showed me Quad Al which he was building in a small narrow garage in Culver City. Truly an amazing guy to do the things he did and in such a small garage.
Oooh yeah!! A Double Ditto on that!!!! (Problem enough finding someone willing to donate 4 running Allisons to the cause, but it might prove even more difficult finding someone with big enough cajones and a small enough brain to drive it, too!) Mart3406 ================
I remember the White and Quad Al when Tex Collins owned them. Quad sat in the window of his shop on Lankershim Bl in North Hollywood and the truck sat along side of his house in Sun Vallley, near La Tuna Canyon Rd.
I remember seeing the chassis without any engines in it, in the swapmeet at the Goodguys Indy Show years ago (10 years +) , always wondered about the history of the car and what ever happened to it. It is truly a survivor. John
There is one in a tractor about 5 mi down the road from me, also one in the corner at the "Salem Speed Shop". Didn't E.J. Potter have (2) in a tractor back in the 80's?
I saw Big Al with the flopper body run at Irwindale years ago. It would come off the line smoking and fishtailing like crazy, but the engine going BOOOOOOOOOOHH at about 1200 rpm.
You sure that's enough engine? Time to start stacking! very cool, definitely be watching for progress.
My neighbor bought, I believe 70 some new in the crate Allisons... He said something to the effect of "They were putting them in boats and tractors...They're aircraft engines damnit!"
as a tractor puller, there is nothing quite like the sound of FOUR Allisons singing in unison at about the 300 foot mark. those photos of the racks full of Allisons make me drool.
