Hi. Well the more net surfing I do the further I get from the truth...grrr:mad:

Can someone please tell me definatively what flywheel my 65 318 poly needs so
I can run the a833 OD 23spline 4speed and 10.5" pressure and clutch plate.

On a brighter note the 39 Dodge is progressing now that the wifes 48 pop is on the road...or nearly.Have posted a few pics.

    Thanks

•All post-62 flywheels have the same 6-bolt crank pattern, A-LA-B-RB.

•Post-62 flywheel come in three ring gear tooth counts; 130; 143, 172.

•The diameter of the flywheel ( tooth count) must be matched to the bellhousing to attain starter engagement.

•The flywheel does not care what clutch package or transmission you use.

Be aware of external balanced 'wheels used on cast crank engines; you will need to rebalance them.

Thanks. Its all becoming a little clearer. How do I get the correct tooth count tho?Is it a matter of trial fits with starter bolted up??And if need be it sounds like I can buy a new LA fw and have it ballanced? Thanks for the help

The bellhousing will have a casting number and you can identify the year with it. Generally, the year and application will determine the flywheel.

Very few small blocks used the 172, so you are probably safe.

Most of the 60's and 70's used the 130.

The 143 came back in the late 70'? maybe early 80's.

    130 on left.......................143 on right

Be careful about using a bellhousing from a 64-65 273. It looks like a later cast iron 318-340 bellhousing but it uses the 6 cylinder flywheel. The biggest clutch a six cyl flywheel will handle is the 10 inch 12 spring clutch from a dodge truck slant 6. Bellhousings are different between the 6 and a 273 but the flywheels are the same. The six cyl flywheel will bolt on a 318 crank. The 273 bellhousings are rare so you probably won't come across it but beware.

  6. if you are using the 1974 up 4 speed overdrive unit they used until about 1983....you will need the bellhousing that goes with the 833 overdrive trans....it has a bigger bearing in front.....

    Have just done a little further digging and found the cast No. 2892 482 refers to ally bell and;
    10.5 clutch A833,1969-71,a-b-c & e bodys,273,318,340,360. AND/OR

    LA A833 10.5 clutch,1968-69,a Body.

So where does this leave me? can any one state a flywheel to suit???

Thanks For all the help thus far.....
