Hey all, I've got a dropped '32 axle and a set of '48 F-1 spindles. Trying to put them together, so I ordered a kingpin set from Speedway #91032122 Pins fit axle fine, bushings are too small to go into the spindles. Speedway says they may be worn spindles that someone drilled out and put oversized bushings in. OK, I can see that. Any suppliers out there for oversized O.D. bushings? Or should I shim mine with real thin steel? Thanks! John
1942-48 Ford King Pin Kit Price: $39.99 ST In Stock View Larger Item #: 91032122 Item Details: Also fits: 1942-48 Mercury, 1942-52 Ford Truck F-1, F-2, F-3 This is what I bought. Wrong stuff?
Should be the right stuff. I have never seen spindles overbored before, but that wouldn't say it hasn't happend at some point. Your only hope might be a outfit like McMaster Carr for machineable stuff and make you own. Might check to see if the I.D. of the bushings is somewhat close to the O.D. of the pin to check if maybe they sent you the wrong bushings... They shouldn't slide right in because they are meant to be fitted after pushing them in, but should at least be close. Ha! I hit submit and thought about it... Sure you don't have F100 spindles? '53 '56 have a larger diameter king pin by a bit... Can't remember how much but .875 comes to mind.
Have machine shop turn a sleeve to fit the spindle and the smaller bushing. If you have a lathe or a friend with a lathe you can do it your self. good luck
Could you not find some more spindles? They can't be THAT hard to find. Do you have any other spindles? A? 32? 35-36?? Just saying it because the holes should be the same diameter and you can see if your spindles have indeed been modified. Mart.
Maybe I do have F-100 spindles, as they measure out that .875~ish. I always thought F-100s came after the F-1 series, did they overlap years? If they are F-100s, can I use them? I like being different once in a while.
Check the KPI, might be Lincoln stuff. Memory fuzzy but Ford is 7 and Linc is 8 or 9 The Linc's use larger pins. Just a heads up if you do find oversized bushings.
'49-'52 For F1s and '53-'56 for the usable F100 years. Brakes were basically the same. With some oversized bushings, I don't see why you can't run them.
Should be able to tell for sure which spindles you have. '48-'52 F-1 spindles have an integral steering arm on the right side and a bolt on arm on the left side. '53-'56 F-100 have bolt on steering arms on both sides.
True...and 53 - 56 F100 also has a different angle for the kingpin and would require the axle to be bent to allow proper Camber settings even if you machined adapter bushings.
to echo on what ELpolacko said you might wana check to see if you have a lincoln set, you can check this thread http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=6861545#post6861545 and see if your stuff looks like it, turns out my stuff was 47 Lincoln.
I'd just get a set of 37-48 Ford car spindles and use that year king pin set. Sell the truck spindles and move on. I have the Bendix style F-1 or F-100 brakes on my early Ford car spindles and it stops great. I believe in keeping it simple.
Not sure about ford kingpin sizes but i know 50s mopar truck pins are .875. As mentioned above, any competent machineshop should be able to whip out a bushing set for you for a reasonable price.
I went with Speedway spindles to get the job done. The other spindles are still around, fits F100 trucks but in a bigger size and at a greater angle.. Ah well, live and learn
