I've got a day to kill in Omaha this week. Just looking for suggestions for anything car/truck related to do/gawk at? If not automotive, I'm up for about anything else that might be interesting/unique. Any locals care to chime in? Thanks!
slip a few miles west to Lincoln, NE and visit the "Museum of American Speed" http://www.museumofamericanspeed.com/default.dlp
Yah, the SAC Museum is pretty cool. They got an SR71 Blackbird right inside the door. I haven't heard of any "car related" stuff to see. They do have a Harbor Freight store
Speedway's museum is just about the only car related big thing to do in the area. Lincoln is about a 45min drive straight west on I-80. The museum is pretty easy to get to once you get into downtown Lincoln. If you go to Lincoln, you will drive right past the exit for the SAC museum, its about a half mile off of the interstate. It is really cool too, the last time I was there, they had a Goony Bird in the restoration bay. If you have to stay in Omaha, we do have one of the biggest zoos in the US. If you dont have kids with you though, you may look kinda creepy. The Omaha Stormchasers are the AAA team for the KC Royals and they have a brand new stadium in west Omaha. Thursdays are thirsty thursdays, $1 beers and dogs. The Old Market is our downtown area. That is where the bars and resturants are. The Upstream is a brewpub and has great food. Try their scotch ale. If you need to get dirty, you can come over and rebuild the Holley 94 for my flathead. My buddy owns a dive bar in the midtown area. If you get bored, PM me and Ill meet you for a beer.
You missed world of wheels by a week......the rest of the year is pretty dry, quaker steak and lube usually has a car/scooter shows on the weekend, over by the casinos in council bluffs across the river. http://nebraska.wish.org/news-and-events/event-calendar/
Don't forget about the casinos on the river...you can spend all day there IF you've got enuff cash with you. Here's the front of the SAC museum with my bro's '54 Caddy sitting there. R-
There is a great Union Pacific ?? railroad museum in downtown Omaha. Really does a great job of showing how our country was settled and how railroads were a huge part of it. Lots of "traditional" stuff in the displays and videos. There are even some old cars and trucks on display as well as old railroad equipment.
if your there on a wednesday the cruise ins at flashbacks should be in swing by now i think? tons and tons of all kinds of cool cars. one of the local omaha guys should be able to chime in with an address for you on that
83rd street, between Oak and Spring. 2 blocks south of Center street. Lots of construction in the area, may be a bitch to get to.
The Union Pacific museum is really cool, it has a lot of really neat stuff in the lower level including a late late 20s early 30s chain drive Mack truck that they still break out every once in a while for parades. It also has a really cool snack bar/ soda shop on the main level with pretty good food.
Cruise across the river to council bluffs and check out general dodges restored residence.... Take a drive up on lewis n clark monument and you can almost SEE lincoln from there. : )
As mentioned, The SAC Museum near the Platte River along I80 is very good. Many planes to see. SR-71, B36 6-engine pusher prop. Helos The Smith Museum in west Lincoln is a must if you're headed that way. Back-tracking just a bit, there is another Railroad Museum in Council Bluufs IA that is very interesting. Union Pacific Railroad Museum (Council Bluffs, Iowa) | Iowa Backroads And don't leave Council Bluffs without seeing this. (OK, maybe a virtual tour is sufficient), but it is kinda neat to see.
