Can anyone tell me what would be the correct (or at least reasonably close) color orange for a 9 inch Ford differential?
    Thanks,
    Dan

    Mine's black, it looks great.

Originally the housing was probably painted black, and the center painted red oxide, usually the red is still there inside on a stock center housing.

But a hot rod needs it painted different

Gold or silver base, candy yellow, followed by candy red.

  4. I had one that had never been painted and it was very close to Red Oxide Primer. So I've been doing mine in Red Oxide with Clear over it for years. I think it looks cool as hell and most folks don't get it

Center section only -- red oxide, I spray a little matte clear. Rest of the housing was matte black or nothing.

Hey, I was going to say that:cool:

The correct shade of orange would be chassis black wouldn't it?

Damn, he had me scared for a minute, I thought I had logged onto Mustang restorers are us instead of the HAMB.

Correct color for a differential ? Good lord aren't we anal. The correct color is any damned color you want to paint it. Some differentials were painted some were not.

The chunk on mine had been painted with red oxide primer, the housing had been painted black but the whole thing was coated with rust when I got it. You can't tell much about it in the first pic, but in the last one you can still see that it was red oxide... It's just about ready for a coat of 2k...

I worked at a Ford dealership back in the day. I checked differential fluid in many of them and I don't recall them being painted.

Oh, Man!...Whatever you do, don't forget to include the factory correct chalk marks.
Or, the factory correct differential carrier copper washers with markings.
And when that "Expert" crawls under yer' car to see if you got it right...kick him in the ass for me.
    ...sheesh!

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help. The car is OT (70 Torino GT, 429 SCJ, 4 speed, "N" case rear), which is why I didn't mention it. For those who took offense, I'm glad you had a chance to vent :).
