Last Thing to Clean Your Car With Before Paint

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Oldmics, Mar 10, 2011.

  1. What do you painting experts use to clean the dust off before the final wipe with the tac cloth?-Something damp I would assume to attract the dust.

I Use Turpentine, strips wax, prevents fisheye.I am sure you'll get other opinions too.but I had a Body Shop for 25 years and it was the most reliable product I found. the wax & grease remover sold by the paint manufacturers is not reliable in my experiences

Yep, cheaper than Wax & grease remover, and not flammible. More reliable too.

Denatured Alcohol, I learned this while hanging out at the local boat yard where they paint large yachts. I took this trick home and have been using it for years and have never had a problem.

I usually use a wet laquer thinner paper towl , and a dry one behind it , seems to do well for me , but , I never thought about using denatured alcohol or the glass cleaner , alot cheaper it would seem...learn something new everyday here on theHAMB:D

same as ratrod dude seems to work pretty good

  9. Old bodyman/painter/dealership manager turned me on to denatured alcohol, but he cut it 50% with water(he's a cheap-ass by nature:p)
Benefit I could see of that is the alcohol won't clean off organics(dirt/grime), but the water will...while the alcohol will dissolve contaminants that the water won't touch

I still use wax and grease remover in a pressurized sprayer

Polish the car with the swirl remover, this will remove all the fine line and swirls from the paint.

I use PPG DX330 for a cleaner, then a tack rag right before I paint.

The shop I work at uses Sherwin Williams paint system. We use a waterborn cleaner followed by wax and grease remover, then tack rag before paint. The waterborn leaner will remove handprints better than the wax and grease remover.

If you use the stuff with the extra silicone it helps the paint stick real good....

I'm kidding of course. I think your discussing as a final finish. My favorite is the 50/50 alcohol water mix before final tack down. My understanding is never to use lacquer thinner as it affects the bond of any polyester filler present and can cause problems down the road.

By the way, welcome aboard timothysmith. I just can't help abusing the new guys.
