My buddy Erwin has a fantastic '49 shoebox, but it needed a haircut. He decided that 4" would be the right amount. Neither of us has done a chop before, so go easy on us! After consulting a few articles and videos we dove into it. These are the pics of the begining stage... plenty more to come as progress is made.
Cool! Check out my thread "chops in so cal "for some tips and pics of finishing it off! Way to grab your sack and go for it by the way
I'm glad you were able to show some restraint on the chop and not over chop it. Four inches is a good amount of chop for a shoebox. Good choice moving the rear window forward as well, that helps keep the proportions looking right. Keep up the good work, you guys look like you're on the right track. Keep us posted.
looking good.. make sure when you get the front window roof area welded back at the "A" pillars the window flange is flat for the glass...keep the pics a coming!
I like the 4 inch chop if your not going with a full blown radical custom. Factory should have done that. Right on the money so far. Love 49 grilles. My fav of the 3 yrs.
Thanks you guys! My buddy Erwin (his car) goes by Tatertot on here... hopefully he'll chime in. chopped 51... yes you are correct, the easy part IS done, we know there's a long way to go but we're looking forward to the challenge.
I have sen a lot of shoebox chops and saw how they were done . I have to admit yours was the easiest I have seen yet to do ! It's not like the usual radical chops I have seen on most which I personally don't care for at all . Yours did come out nice ! Retro Jim
pretty cool - looks like you did some good planning by keeping stock rear glass. always fun welding sheet metal.
