flathead oil pump ?

    i want to remove the upper oil pump gear and shaft on a late flathead ..i have the cam idler gear out ....there is a roll pin through the gear holding it on..if i punch it through where will it end up...it looks like it has no where to go... looks like it will hit the block casting before it comes out...any help ..thanks sawbuck

    I suggest you remove the oil pump from the engine first.

    the pump is removed..just the shaft and gear remains..

    It's not supposed to do that, shaft stays with the pump. Dried goo makes the pump hard to pull out sometimes, but it will come outa there. Shaft must have broke off.

    So what is the story? Was the motor a runner that locked up ( because of bad oil pump) or is it a surprise package? I have lots of pumps if you need one that works, for my fresh rebuild I bit the bullet and got a hundered dollar new melling. You can see the wired nut that holds the relief spring in on the pump housing. Can change or shim the spring to up the pressure and Ilike to see 20#at idle rather than nothing.

    was a junk yard motor,the motor was not froze ... but the pump broke off half way in the block....heat and penatrating oil nope...made a slide hammer broke the gear pin ...drilled it out and picked away at it...got it thanks
