Hey gang, My wife, daughter and I are gonna hit Vegas for a week this Saturday. We're not interested in casinos or shows, but found some cool family stuff that's cheap and fun. Any HAMB suggestions for additional cheap-ish fun? I've never been to Vegas, staying at the Polo Suites for a week. My wife and I would really like to focus on classic car stuff if possible. Thanks!
Big car collection at the Imperial Palace. Hot Rod Grill on Hot Rod Hill So Cal Speed Shop LVMS Shelby Factory Lots more. There is a Vegas social group here but not real active. For shows and cruise nights and such www.Vegas-rides.com
There's a whole lot of stuff out at the race track, as mentioned the Shelby shop, take the tour. Lots of history and museums in the communities around Vegas, also the nuke museum, they used to run a bus out to the trinity site on Thursdays. At least that's how I entertain my selfe when we visit the inlaws.
For fun check out the Las Vegas pinball museum, I think it's off Tropicana Blvd. Hundreds of vintage pinballs and arcade games from the 60s-70s that are set up to play for the public.
I forgot about that...yeah, the pinball museum is fun! They moved it sometime in the past year or two, I don't remember the new location but look it up
If you have any interest in firearms, go to The Gun Store on Tropicana Ave. You can rent a machine gun and put a few mags through it. Look up Baby Stax cafe...AWESOME breakfast, best Huevos Racheros I've ever had, everything else was outstanding as well. Chris
They also just opened up the mob museum down on freemont, pretty cool 3 floors of nothing but how the mob got established in Vegas. Pretty neat history.
Wife and I went to the Gun Store (I think it was called). It's a shooting range, we shot a 9mm Glock and a 44 Desert Eagle. Coming from Canada (where you are only allowed to defend yourself with a fishing pole) shooting a handgun was pretty cool. I didn't find out about the Shelby place at Las Vegas Motor Speedway till after we got home ... guess we're gonna have to go back.
Red Rock Canyon is straight west on Charleston. Desert vistas, hiking, cool stuff about the flora and fauna at the visitor center. This time of year is just about as good as it gets for going outside and walking around. Hoover Dam is a spectacular feat of engineering. It's about a half hour drive to get there, the tour is not expensive, but I think well worth it.
And the Hard Hat tour that goes down into the bowels of the dam to see the workings is worth the extra. Was closed for a number of years after 9/11 but is supposed to be back operating.
Ive only been to Vegas about three times so no expert here,,........but Honestly skipping the casinos is a loss on your part,a loss of awesome archetectural feats and the nite lights of Vegas-Man!...... eating-that is cool isnt it? the Bellagio and Ceasars palace and many others are as awesome in their designs as Disneyland or many other Iconic tourist destinations...and hay what about that darned Pawn shop we see on TV every week now.....
I didn't think about architecture, always have a good eye out for that. Definetly want to check out everything, just not a gambling type. I want to check out the Pawn shop and Rick's Restorations. Probably both movie sets by now, no real connection to reality but still plan to see.
"Pawn Shop", last time I drove by there, there was a line of people around the building waiting to get in. I think they only allow so many people at a time. I agree about checking out the Casinos. And, I'm not sure if your wife likes shopping, but, there is no place like Las Vegas to over spend your budget. Best Italian Restaurant, Marciano's, across the boulevard from Wynn's. Must make reservations, not expensive, just good food and very popular. Ditto on the Imperial Palace car collection, it's great and you can even buy the cars that are there!!
I drove by the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop Saturday. Kids wanted to stop... until they saw 200+ people in line! Even my kids aren't that star struck... I enjoy the show but could care less about meeting TV personalities.
One of the greatest things to do in Las Vegas is......Fremont Street after dark. Google "Fremont Street Experience", you won't regret a minute of it.
