    Let's start with the Lynn:
Is there a date on the catalog?
Any Information on the owner of the company? (Lynn Franklin?)
I can't be sure of the address from the picture you posted, can you check and post?
Are there any variables on the quick changes? Like sprint type cases with the change gears in the housings or do they have the change gears in the cover?
Same for side plates and bells.
    Magnesium and/or aluminum?
    Scans would be welcome.

    Thanx,
    Bruce

    John,

Actually yours is the only Rogers I have ever heard about. The casting is very similar to a non-change that I have. Supossedly, it is a Bennett. I'll post pictures so you can have a look for yourself.

Sorry, I don't know any more than that.

    Bruce

PS Would you mind if I use your pictures in my book, if I ever get back to it?

That is really cool! Unfortunately, that's all I can say about it.

Bruce, I scanned the only pages that had qc's on them - the case looks exactly like a Frankland. There's no date on the catalog, but I'm pretty sure I got it in the early '70's. There is no owners name just affiliate of Franklin Machine, 75 So. Owasso Blvd.; St Paul, Minn. There are no variables just stock car rears only. The gears are in the cover. I don't know how to make the pictures any bigger. I hope this helps. Dave

FWIW and probably OT, some Margay go-carts were not chain drive but were gear driven. The MC-9 McCullough engine bolted directly to the gear case up top and the live axle ran through the lower part of the case. A 4-bolt rear cover provides access to a possible 7 different ratios of idler gears to run between the drive (engine) and driven (axle) gears. Idler gear engagement depth is determined with specific pillow blocks for the ratio desired. If you raise the rear of the kart high enough, the ratio change can be done in less than 4 minutes, because the lube does not have to be drained and then refilled.
Can't tell when my kart was made, but I figure by its design sometime in the late 60s. The Margay website was of little help.

The catalog pictures in the upper left was a picture of Davis Johnson's sprint car [#91], can not tell if it was Charlie Masters or Ray Duckworth]. Davis was from Harraordburg, Ky.

Dave, Does your catalog have a date on it? I have been wondering about the hub and drum in the photo, now I see it in your catalog. The housing in the photo is a 39-41 Ford 3/4 ton as called for in the one application. The cases in the catalog appear to be narrow,(3.75") like a Frankland, compared to a Halibrand (4.375").

  9. WOW! This thread turned into something amazing! I am learning about QCs for my Salt car and have two Franklands of varied age. Seeing all the different ones is priceless!

    Thanx Dave.
I have come to the conclusion that the 'Lynn Franklin' story is the most plausible. You have confirmed my suspicions that the Lynn Quick change line was rather limited and looked almost exacty like a Frankland.
The note about the extra capacity side bell is interesting. If you find more info about additional Lynn Quick Changes, please share.

My understanding about Safety Racing is that they made hubs & drums etc. but no QCs. The catalog cover shows a Quickie but it looks like the spindles are highlighted. Does the rest of the catalog support this?
Also, dates and ownership information would be nice.

Bruce, Your right the safety race case, according to the book is a halibrand. I have one, when I needed a case I got one from Safety Race. It was heavier duty than the halibrand I had. Here is a page from the Safety Race catalog and pictures of the qcs I have - one frankland has 50-51 3/4 ton axle housings, one has frankland aluminum housings. the other is the halibrand and has aluminum side plates. Hope this helps. Dave

when I was piecing cars together with no money[most of the time]I had a Franklin rear in a sprint with cross torsion bars, normally that would not give you enough room to pull the back cover.Franklin had a two piece cover that let you pull just the back like a halibrand. The other odd rear cover you may run into is a CAE that engages and disengages the bottom change gear to take it in and out of gear- CAE used it in their first rear engine sprint car.A local guy had one for the FRONT quick change on his 4 wheel drive sprint car![and yes this was on dirt!]

I got my Magnesium Jones Quickie around 2007. I located Levi in Georgia and called him asking a few questions. He had a website but I can't seem to find it now. In our discussion, he mentioned that his foundaries in Indy kept catching fire back in the day and they pretty much ran him out of town.

Used to race with Hanley Taylor who was the principle owner of Safety Racing Equipment. They made the various welded and cast side housings and axles that fit onto a Halibrand champion center section. These were mainly built for the Grand Rapids upright super modified trade. Hanley's own car had a 3" Halibrand open tube in it, though. He made some really nice two piece magnesium wheels that were very popular in the upper Midwest.

Integral aluminum hubs and drums that I have seen are almost all either Safety Racing or Frankland. SRE (that was what they abbreviated themselves as back in the day) made hubs that worked with cut Buick drums, both with the wide Ford hub pattern and more modern bolt patterns. We also had a couple of guys locally in Grand Rapids who put these together in backyard facilities. I am sure there were other suppliers, but Frankland and Safety Racing Equipment were the biggies on this stuff.

Three examples of hub and brakes, 4C Racing(San Jose,Ca),SRE drum and disc, the SRE drum assys I have work with early Ford (39-48) brakes. 4C's utilize wider shoes, their backing plates have logo stamped in. SRE discs came in aluminum or mag.I have used stock Ford drums (37-39) on Frankland Hubs.

    Dave,

Does the CAE catalog have a date? I know that Jim Culbert was from La Mesa. I thought his shop was there, too. The address on your catalog is San Diego.
What I'm trying to figure out is that catalog before or after Culbert Sold out to Curt Waters, who combined it with Halibrand.

Any scans of the Quick Change parts are appreciated.

    Thanx,

    Bruce

I have one of those spacers. I got it with a Jones rear end. I'd like to see the Frankland flat cover. Any pictures?
    Thanx,

  25. A couple years back I sold a magnesium case Rodgers on Ebay. Seems to me that it had Philadelphia also on the case. It was a Crosley unit.

Maybe you can help ID this QC for me. Jones mag bells, Winters deep cover, Frankland rebuilt it for me and stated it took the same size spool as a Winters.

The tech thought it might be a Winters, but there are NO markings on the center casting, and the guy at Winters told me that if it was Winters, it would be marked as one.

I've not seen any that have this style of fins at the back. I'm wondering if it's an older Coleman QC

    Thanks,

Have had several, Highland, Frankland, Winters, but the most unusual one was aluminum, each leg and bell in one piece, with the spring pads cast in place as well...Had forgotton about it until this thread, may have been a LeBaron, although my memory says LaGrange for some reason....We all thought it was made for dirt cars originally. Ended up under my friend Moon's GMC /37 Chevy stockcar after I broke what was in it, and it's still around. Wish I had pictures.
