Rick, this is classic! Barely visible behind the two guys in orange shirts is Tom Beatty's 40 sedan delivery, with a blown Olds, probably one of the fastest push trucks at Bonneville...

Lou Bingham's coupe, around '52. His push truck was a '27 roadster pickup that Lou bought to tow the coupe to Bonneville, and the story of this adventure still makes good reading today (think it was in Hop Up)...Lou was originally from La Canada, but moved to La Jolla in the late '50s, and his Bonneville roadster was always parked in front of the Flying A station he ran...

  7. I tried to model my truck after the ones I remember seeing at Ascot and El Mirage when I was a kid.

I made the sideboards after seeing the Jot Horne ones my buddy has that used to be on Jot's truck.

Really good pictures...it is very interesting, too, that there is no evidence that anyone other than Ford made trucks back then! Ford ruled absolutely, then went to hell in a handbasket right after these pics were made.
Look in the Genat Book on dry lakes...there are occasional glimpses of the trucks in there, including some very nice ones.
Old HRM's from the fifties are another good source of support truck pictures, as many classes of drag cars were push start and the trucks are lined up with the racers in the pictures.

  17. Somebody must have shot of Tom Beattys hoodless panel delivery with the blower sticking out,,,rumered to have pushed some cars faster than they could run,,,,,,,,,,,:D

And then...not a truck, actually...but that early streamliner being pushed off by a tag team consisting of '51 Chevy pushing a Model A roadster up to its starting speed so it could shove the streamliner up to whatever large number its gearing required...!!

Absolutly amazing pictures you guys come up with. I have plenty of ideas to work with for my truck. Now I want to rig my Model A up so I can tow it around behind the truck. ;)

Are there any rules regarding the push bumper size, height, etc?

The last time I checked there were no rules, but it had to be high enough and wide enough to match the car you had to push or the car didn't move. If you want a pretend push bumper just make it a sensible size, proportionate to your truck.

Anyone notice every truck is a ford.

  26. Awesome thread, cool picks. I’m sure it was more than Fords working as push cars, but as we can see Fords is dominated so far. It’s cool for a Ford nut to see those old Fords doing the job.
