Has anyone ever installed a headliner in a 54 Chevy car? I am getting ready to do the interior on my car and I have a few questions. Does the glass have to come out on this particular car to do the headliner? What can I use to replace the crumbling, old tack strips that you staple the headliner to? I am guessing the wind lace goes in first. Is this correct? Any help from guys that have actually done this would be greatly appreciated!! Also if I decide to take it somewhere, does anyone know of a good headliner shop in the Austin Texas area that would do a good job? Thanks for the help guys!
the windows stay in the car remove all inside chrome and trim and take it out slowley the old one and you have to have the metal bows also i used some staples on mine when i did it a a most of the materail just pushes up inside of the crack you can google it that will help out alot trial and error is what i did
Windows don't need to come out. Windlace goes in first. You can replace the crumbling tackstrip with new, I use a rubber one. There are different sizes of tack strip, try googling it, that should come up with a supplier for ya (The supplier I get it from won't sell w/o a tax id). I use rivets to install the new tack strip. Be patient and you'll do fine.
Awesome! Thanks. I was hoping I would not have to take out the glass. I hope I can tackle this without a bunch o wrinkles.
Depending on material used for the headliner, you can use steam to get wrinkles out. Thats what car plants use.
Theres a reason its not cheap ! Ive taken one out in one piece and thats hard enough...but take your time and you might get it in right. In a pinch an old fanbelt might be used in place of tackstrip. Seems like my guy started in the middle , then worked his way foward and back. They also had a steam wand, good luck.
did you order a headliner for your car? doesn't company sell tack strips. or whatever, for install? yes, installation is a real challenge if your first try.
I found some tack strips through national chevy association. They are on the way! Ez-boy rod interiors is making the headliner.

Just to for warn ya the tack strip from national chevy you may have to split in half for the rear window and the windshield, it will most likely be too thick.
