Am cosidering removing the Spal fan and installing a multi-blade fan. I have the clearance in front of the waterpump but not outermost groove on the crank pulley. If possible I'd like to machine off that groove leaving the inner groove that runs my single wire Delco Alt. Am uncertain about external balance problems on the 302. The pulley has a small counterweight under that groove and would be removed with the machining.

I think you would be OK on machining it off. If not the yards are full of em'

I think so too. I've swapped multiple pulleys on my SBF with no problems. The balance is in the balancer.

I've machined them off many times with no problems.

I'm not quite sure of what year 302 you are working on because the balance changed in '79-'80 from 28oz. to 50oz. Early 302s used a 3 or 4 bolt on lower pulley. Do you have any pics.?
