Wow, almost scanned right by this EXCEPTIONAL pic, Gary! Looks as though the DeSoto is practically
spanking new. It's a VERY rare '54 Coronado special spring edition, featuring a Hemi V-8. The Coronados
were ONLY offered in '54 and '55 and represented efforts by the POST-Keller company to begin breaking
with the staid "librarian's car" image which K.T. Keller had marketed to. Besides the special interior
appointments and the Hemi automatic, these Coronado's featured DeSoto's first two-tone paint schemes.
THOUGH this surely seems unimpressive by later standards, it represented a successful, limited experi-
ment, paving the way for a TRI-tone Coronado for '55 and -- of course -- the flamboyant DeSotos that
followed in the Forward Look finned era! Gary, I am glad you dredged this snap shot up. It is the first
period photo I have seen of owners with one of the rare Coronado's, as opposed to a promotional photo
or ad. Coronados were meant to test marketing waters, not to make a smash; thus, they are some of the
rarest of the, then, CHANGING breed!

Probably misspelled - I'm guessing it was Bisbee, AZ.

 

When I look at this thread, I like to open up a second window to Google Maps and see if I can locate present day photos to match the old scenes. I believe this is the same corner in Jackson, KY - the one building with three windows on the second floor is about the only thing still recognizable.

There have been many myths and stories about Corvairs cathing on fire, flipping over, spinning out of control, passed on, twisted and exaggaderated from person to person for 40 some years.
