Anybody else seen this in a flathead??

  1. I thought this was some funny shit. I had to share it with you all. I have been working on a 59 flatty. So I decided to change the oil and as I pulled the so called filter out it was a roll of TP. Haha

my 50 ford had TP in it too a few years back

  4. I've heard of people doing that. It probably doesn't work, but I don't think those oil filter canister deals work with regular filters in them.

That doesn't look like a stock filter housing. There was a brand of aftermarket filter that actually took a roll of toilet paper as the element back in the '50s and '60s. But I don't remember the name.

If I am correct, when I was a younger guy, there was a advertisement for a filter that actually used toilet paper. Suppose to be an inexpensive way to filter your oil. Never seen one though, thanks for the photo.

Some of you don't get out much! ;) Search toilet paper, Stilko, etc here and find a bunch of info.

My eyes are not great, but the oil looks cleaner, "not black" like most old non detergent engines. So maybe it does work?

Yes Frantz, that's the one I remember but Stilko may have too. Nothing like jumping on the bandwagon when there's such a great idea????? I wonder how those old engines reacted to having all those fibers floating around in the oil.

  17. Oops I just did a search on this matter I see it's been covered. I was told by an older autoparts guy that people used to use pepper to stop radiator leaks. Has any body heard of that?

Looks like it was past time to wipe! So, what are your plans... 2 ply or 4 ply? Scented or non-scented? The possibilities are endless.

I worked at a gas station in 1962. All cars didnt come with a oil filter and many with a filter wasnt full flow.
Our local shop teacher drove a 1953 chevy with a toliet paper filter on it . Car had over 300,000 miles on it , he never changed the oil , only the filter and added one quart.
Must have had 10-12 cars with a paper filter add on.

1940's and 50's Toilet Paper wasn't as flimsy and as degradable as todays stuff.
This was done quite a bit by folks shaving costs.

As Zeke said, egg white and pepper, or just pepper, or just egg whites, there are lots of things like that out there...
