I'm looking to remove some under body coating from the front of my F100. I've tried a wire wheel, a flap disc, and a scotch pad on my angle grinder with very little success. They all just gum up too quickly. What have you done too remove this stuff?

Dry ice layed on the inside, and the stuff comes right off with a scraper.

Get it warm and peal it off with a putty knife. If memory serves thats how we have done it in the past.

Usually an eletric heat gun and a scraper, don't let the stuff burn, just soften and scrape.

A squeeze bottle and water is good for flames, ( keep the heat gun out of the way)

Mineral spirits or paint thinner on a cloth will get off the residue, Wear , mask, gloves and eye protection, horrible stuff.

If it's brittle and on something that can take a little abuse, I use an air chisel with a blunt edge. If it's soft, I use a heat gun and a scraper.

Eastwood sells some stuff in a spray can that you spray it on and after ten minutes or so it wipes off. I haven't used the product but they have been selling it for years.

  8. I had to scrape the enitre bottom of my 50 Chevy. I used a propane torch and a scraper. Just get it soft and it will come right off. After I scrubbed it all down with mineral spirits and a green scotchbrite pad to get rid of any residue. It is a slow process but it worked well. Todd

Heat gun and a scraper works great. Just remember to put down some cardboard or something. Otherwise you end up scrapping it off the floor later from stepping all over it.

Dont ask me how I know.

The whole underbody and frame of my old military truck was coated in old asphalt undercoating..

I used a needle gun to knock it off. Like you would use to knock rust off shipd or marine equipment. Worked better than anything else I have used, and not so messy. If you have a compressor that will run one.

I just finished my 40; Dual range heat gun on the low range (most of the time) and acouple of putty knives. Wipe the panel clean with laquer thinner, and it'll be like the day it was stamped. BTW, I tried the spray remover, and this is much better.
