  1. No some Fords have BBCs. ;)

The Ol' Man's family was from Austria. He always said that the only difference between an Austrian and a German was that someone drew a dotted line on a map and said OK all you guys on this side are Austrian and all you guys on that side are German.

He had a ship shot out from under him in the North Sea during that particular war and he never held any ill will toward German people in general. I don't think it was because of his ancestry he was damned proud to be an American as well.

I learned a funny thing about war once, the fellas on the other side are just like you except they wear a different uniform for the most part. All they want to do is live to see tomorrow.

Very enjoyable, thanks. It's really interesting how a short piece can raise so many questions and situations. Love those damn spitfires.

    Just a friendly reminder...
Don't tell that an Austrian or German by birth and raised there, unless you want to be laughed at.

ok now sortah off topic and I hope I don't get the thread bumped...
...something I built a few years ago, and my 38 Plymouth, the one that was burned to the ground on the interstate and can be seen here on the HAMB, is in the background

  12. I actually mentioned it to an Austrian tile man working here in the states and he grined and said that was probably closer to the truth than I realized.

I do know as a rule that both sides of the dotted line think they are better than the other. But then again a lot of Americans think they are better than both of the above mentioned, don't they.

It is a pretty good joke and funny to both sides, no doubt.
They are a bit uptight over this subject there and it rather lightens up their deep and centuries old feelings about each other.

Very interesting history though of both nations, especially in the last few centuries, which are quiet different and dramatically shaped our world, including the USA, today.

Also I have always found it interesting how much more fascinated Americans are about the Nazis compared to Germans and Austrians, who are very well educated and knowledgeable about their own history, but generally lack a notable interest in it. It's more about moving on and learning from mistakes to them, rather then dwelling on it.
And that really makes a lot of sense, if you live there.

I wish I knew of more videos like that, I'm into traditional cars big time. 32 Fords with Hemis, 3 pedals. own two. But I have an interest in anything that pollutes the air: Cars, motorcycles, prop aircraft, steam locomotives, etc. Love them all. Glad other people enjoyed it as much as I did!

  17. I have to agree about them not wanting to dwell on the past. I think there is a certain shame that the Germans still feel and they prefer to not be reminded of it. They seem to be afraid that the rest of the world still views them all as Nazis and are hesitant to show anything that could be perceived as German nationalism.

I speak German and have very good friends in Germany. In German conversation recently I was referring to the German navy and mistakenly used the word "Kriegsmarine". They looked uncomfortable, stopped me and gently said, "Mike, Kriegsmarine is an old word, now we say Bundesmarine". Words like "Kriegsmarine" and "Wehrmacht" harken back to the Nazi era.

You are quiet right about that.
Stretching your right arm in public is against the law in both countries, since WW2.

And the shame, especially from the older generations, is still today mixed with the sense of relief and freedom that the allies brought when they liberated the Europeans and the world from the nazis.
Older generations have memorial days and celebrate d-day and lay wreaths on graves of the fallen GIs, every year.

Europe had a lot of unemployment and misery after WW1 and the national-socialist party took advantage of the discontent of the people, to promote their crazy ideology.
Not an excuse of what happened, but part of history and a reality that can still happen today, even in the most civilized of nations...

Want to see some interesting facts about Battle of Britain?
Do a search on Youtube for the Polish flyers in England, 1940.
They had twice as many kills as the Brits.
The documentary is in 6 parts.
    Sad ending.

Yeah, right off the top of my head, Ireland, Portugal, Sweden, and Switzerland were all neutral for various reasons during the war. The Irish had just gained independence ( except Northern Ireland ) from the English not too long before WW2, hence the contemporary question "O.K., so who are we neutral against?"

Yeah? Let me suggest the movie "Red Tails". Sure, its all CGI stuff these days, but pretty realistic compared to real footage of the air war that I've seen.

It still amazes me what they are doing with computers and effects.

Can anyone translate what the Luftwaffe pilot was saying when he was begging for life?

cool short vid. Holland also was neutral in WWII ..my Opa had to work for Germans at the time and my Dad had his teacher taken outta classroom n shot. they were sure relieved when the allies liberated em.
German people do have a lot to be proud of tho IMO...their engineering is some of the very best in the world.
I'm very grateful that neither myself, brother or sons has ever been called up and those who have been or volunteer deserve all our utmost respect and gratitude.

  30. Sorry, but the wing slap and crash landings seem very far-fetched.
