Voodoo Larry's car is cool! I remember a 49-51 Merc. in the early 90s that was running the fixed Lady in the center. Just a freakin' cool look... (I was living in the Inland Empire at that time.)

This is from an article about the car Voodoo Larry built in 2007:

Larry mounted the shiny chrome-plated wheel covers directly to the wheel spindles, an old school 1950s trick that keeps them stationary while the tires and wheels turn. This makes the car seem like its standing still while the tires slide it along.

Do a search of "What's your opinion of this Merc" here on the HAMB and look at the hubcaps to see if that's what you remember. The first picture shows the hubcaps but not that clearly.

Yeah, went there, it was titled "What's your opinion of this custom?" The Lady is horizontal in those pictures. What I have been talking about is a mounting (vertical) onto the spindle so it stays stationary while the rest of the wheel goes around.

Uhhh....yes they were. (just my opinion) Hey guys while your at it, don't forget to hang a couple of those naked lady mud flaps to continue the "theme"....:D

  14. Perhaps it's just my west coast bias, but those things were NEVER considered cool. I guess it's just regional tastes...

Many years ago at the Chickasha OK Swap Meet a fella in the main building had a set of 4 Naked Lady hubcaps new in their original boxes. I offered him $250 for them and he said they weren't for sale, just display. During the meet I offered him $300, $400 and finally $500 and he would not sell them.
Several years later at an NSRA event in Oklahoma City OK I bought the caps, which were still nice but had no boxes(the bestest part!) for $75 from the same guy. It was sad that the original packaging had been destroyed being "on display".
A guy at the NSRA meet had a 40 Coupe with those on the front and I asked him about them slinging off at highway speeds. He said he used them only at events at low speeds. He didn't want to find out they would fly and lose a cap!
Eveyone I ever knew thought they were cool...hanging on a garage wall or a "man cave" these days, but no one would have ever used them on a car.

  16. I'm not really a custom guy, so I don't know what's cool when it comes to hanging "doo dads" on a car, but I would like to have one of those hubcaps to hang in my garage. It would be neat to walk by and rub on it once in a while!:D

The Night Prowler carried what I think you want the last time I looked which has been some time ago but they should still have them. Be sure and put "The" before Night Prowler otherwise you get a bunch of porn sites.

Ha! I gave this vintage one, over twenty years ago, to a friend. It's hanging in one of his bars, now. Thought you'd like to see it, in the dim light.... lady hubcap.jpeg

Photo doesn't load. Kindly do an intro. Not much of an update to a 6 year old thread, but keep trying.
