My vintage Trophy Build

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Emperor Chris, Feb 1, 2012.

  1. I have built several vintage style trophies in the last few years and I decided to post a build thread of my most recent trophy that was presented at the 2012 GNRS Suede Palace. I enjoy building trophies that look like they were built in the 1940’s thru 1960’s. They had great yet simple lines: like a piece of art deco or mid-century furniture. The way I look at it is that if you build a Hot Rod of Kustom that is reminiscent of those eras; why not get a trophy to match? So enjoy the photos.
    1. Here is my rough draft.

    2. This is Clear Green Laxan.

    3. Trophy topper from Limeworks.

    4. The base and the plaque from the trophy shop. I cut this all on my radial arm saw/scroll saw.

    5. Here is the main body of the trophy attached to the base.

    6. Here is where I started to experiment with the lexan shapes.

    7. This is the top with the aluminum risers.

    8. Here is the mock up with the aluminum topper and mesh background.

    9. I changed the lexan shapes from the triangular design to diamonds. It looked way better.

    10. I went ahead and did a satin semi-transparent finish opposed to just a stained wood.

    11. A little close-up of the plaque.

    12. .....and the final product!

Mine is the one on the far left. Made to look like vintage trophy from late 50's. Took my idea from an actual Magnolia Drag Strip trophy from '58.

  8. Thank you everyone. I really appreciate the kind comments. The silver mesh is an aluminum ornamental material I found at Lowe's. The winner of the trophy went to Robert and Sherri Ruiz' Hemi powered hot rod. I borrowed the photo from another thread.

  15. Even non-trophy guys desire a cool piece for their mantel. No doubt the recipient was honored. Nice work.
