Does anyone know if Ford or Lincoln used a 15" wide five wheel? Andy Southard in his book, "Hot Rods of the 1950s" shows a picture of a Model A roadster pickup that he claims has 16" wide five on the back and 15" wide fives on the front. Is this a custom rehooped wheel or was there optional 15" wide five wheels available? I really wanna know!
I dunno. I do know that 15" wide five roundy round wheels are the same bolt pattern. maybe they were making them in the '50s.
To my knowledge Ford's 'wide five' wheels were only 16" and made from '36 through '39. I cut mine down and mounted them on 15" Buick 'hoops' on a '37 Ford Tudor I had in High School.
I had some on my cabriolet which was built in the 50's. Per Dick Spadaro: "If they are 15" like they look to be, they are off road specialty vehicle tires like Marmon Herrinton. They were used on a lot of 4WD vehicles with a balloon type tire for a bigger foot print. " Quite rare.
In the 50s and 60s we cut down 16" centers and welded them into widened 15" rims for circle track. Factory wide 5s are still available in various widths from about 5" to 14" wide in steel and aluminum. Check a roundy round catalog or wheel supplier.
15" wide five wheels were manufactured by Kelsey-Hayes for use on late 30's to 40's Ford produced vehicles that were converted to 4 wheel drive by the Marmon-Harrington Co. an American-based manufacturer of axles and transfer cases for trucks and other vehicles. Curt R
I had a set of 4 sold them on Ford Barn about 10 years ago to someone in Arizona if I remember correctly. Wish I had kept them, they did have a K-H part # on them.
