I want to put a duraspark dist in my 54 Merc with a 91 302 that I also changed over to a carb set up. Of course Ford changed the shaft size on both dist. so I can't take the 91 gear & put it on the 80 shaft. 91 shaft is bigger than the 80.
i bought mine from the ford dealer that carryed ford motorsports parts was like 35 but that was 10 years ago
Summit Racing or perhaps Jeggs is also a good place to look. Try looking in their online catalog or calling the toll free number and asking.
Ford racing sells them. The other thing to do would be by a duraspark distributor for a 85 carbureted Mustang.
Bubba does'nt have one, just has GM gears. The local Ford guy = huh, guess he's not in the know about Ford motorsports. I'll give Summit a call next. Thanks guys for the info
Next time I do this dist swap & when it's a little warmer out I'll for sure take your advice BlueGhost & hit the salvage yards.
what determines the composition of the cam gear? (steel, bronze, etc) thanks, because i don't know...jack
Cam manufacturer's recommend using a soft dist gear for roller cams, such as bronze. Flat tappet camshafts can be run with a steel gear. Had to change the distributor gears on MSD distributors for use in roller SBF and BBF roller engines. I've got some SBF & BBF steel gears that were original on the MSD distributors. Doubt if the shaft size is the same as Duraspark.
Flat tappet cam needs a cast iron gear; the hydraulic roller cams need either a steel gear, bronze, or the composite. Steel is much more durable than the bronze, what I have in my two motors.
