A friend just sent me this:

Killinger und Freund

This is one of the most unusual motorcycles I’ve seen in a long time: it’s a ‘Killinger und Freund’ built in 1935 in Munich, Germany. The art deco styling is obviously eye-catching, but it’s hiding something even more interesting: this machine has a driven front wheel, like the Rokon. And underneath that huge front fender is the engine itself. The motor is a sizeable 600 cc two-stroke triple—or perhaps three one-cylinder engines joined together. Yet the bike was reportedly very light, at just 135 kg. There’s obviously a story behind this picture too: is the soldier an American who found the bike in the dying days of the war, and posed for a picture taken by a colleague? The Allies rolled into Munich on 30 April 1945, and Wikipedia reports “One motorcycle was discovered by the US Army in the spring of 1945 at a German military installation, but it is not known if this was the original prototype or another Killinger und Freund Motorrad.” If you can cast any further light on this oddity, please let us know.

The krauts sure came up with some weird stuff - but a front wheel drive, 3-cylinder, two stroker motorcycle certainly takes the cake!

This pedestrian "overpass" is in Iowa City, Iowa...home of the University of Iowa Hawkeyes. In fact there are two of them & they both remain in operation to this day. Thanks for posting that old pic...

No one seems to get the town right, except you twin6. It's the Round Hill section of Dartmouth Ma. He built the huge mansion with his inheritance and financed an awful lot of science research. Marconi visited and worked with him as did Van de Graff. He left a portion of the estate to MIT and they built a radio telescope on the point for research. It was torn down a couple of years ago by the new owners. I think the mansion is now condos, but I can't swear to it. There's a residents only beach next to it that we go to often. Lovely area.

Right after Christmas I went to Florida for a mini-vacation and stopped by the Dinner Key Marina in Miami. This is where the GM Motoramas were held in the early '50s. It's amazing how much the area still looks the same. Here are some before/after shots of Dinner Key with insets from a photo shoot taken during the '54 Motorama.

 

Sure would like to see MORE Detroit stuff........
