Looking great! I'm waiting to see how you'll tackle the 3 pedals. I need ideas for mine.

 

I'm about half way thru the cab dents. Here's some boring pics of some repaired highs and lows. I know it's boring but it's progress.

Kevin and the crew nailed the stance, motor slant, engineering etc etc etc. Hopefully you say the same thing again when I'm done with my portion.

 

Great truck, great build thread! Is all the tube work in mild steel or did you go for chromoly?

The tubing is chromoly. The welds are visual porn too.
I'm thinking about doing a blue plexiglass floor in the bed so all the fab work doesn't get covered up. I am doing blue tinted glass on the doors and rear window for sure to tie in the early 60's drag look.

I'm still massaging the dents on the cab. Getting closer by the day. I straightened out the big dent on the lower rear wall on the driver side. Looks pretty good.
I ordered up the patch panels for the cab corners and the lower rear cab wall. Not much picture worthy yet.
I'm waiting on the brown truck for some old aluminum velocity stacks I finally found. I been looking for a decent set for a while. They should look good on top of the cross ram.

 

Brian, Pretty wild build! Looks like an unbelievable amount of work has been done on it. How did that new pass door work out for you?

try going on the outter edge of the big dents with multiple studs and working inward it leaves less of a high spot !!

Thanks for the tip. The big dent in the bottom rear panel was a crease that I probably could have left there since most of it is going to be cut out when I do the lower patch panel. I straightened it out anyways because I didn't know how the panel was effected 2 ft away.
I will use your tip on the other rear dent on the other side. It looks like someone whipped a softball at it and it stuck. I've been following your chop thread. Looks killer!

Looks like this will end up being a 3-4 year project, so yes it has been a lot of work.. I haven't tackled the door yet but will soon. Thanks!

I agree man. My 32 is my first hot rod ever. As much as having one is incredible, the knowledge I am learning is priceless. Can't wait to see some more progress on your build! Good luck!

Wow Brian, I have missed your recent updates, but your truck looks killer on all fours, you gotta be smiling! The chassis & cage look stout too, I really am anxious to see this continue. Looks fantastic man!!

I finished up the remainder of the dents and dings on the cowl, firewall, and back wall. The roof issues have me scratching my head a bit. That's up next.
The velocity stacks showed up. They are a nice quality set.
Anxiously waiting for the cab corner patch panels to show up in the brown truck too.

 

Looking for an opinion on the length of the bed.
I made a mock up bed to see if the proportions looked correct before I remake the new bed out of steel. I have 19" in front of the rear wheel and 22" behind the rear wheel. I think I am going to lop off the extra 2" off the rear section. I think the bed looks too long but am not sure.
So does the bed look too long or am I splitting c$&t hairs?

 

Personally, I like them balanced out. 2-3 inches off the ass end doesn't seem like a lot, but it makes a big difference. I'd shorten it.

 

I would do what I did, take one inch tape and lay it vertical between the stake pocket and rear tire. I put down a piece from top to bottom on the bed, skipped an inch then laid down another piece of tape, keep repeating those steps.
What I did after that was take a side profile picture as level as possible, now you can photo shop the bed till you see what you like. Once you see "the look" you're after, count the remaining spaces and tape, then subtract from what is actualy on the bed. This will let you know exactly how many inches to shorten the bed to get the desired results from the photo shop.

Looks good sitting outside!! IMO I would take a little off. It does look a tad long to me. BTW great idea making it out of wood first.

Taking the extra time to make everything in proportion makes such huge difference in the end. I think bed length is probably the hardest part of making a truck look right. If it makes you feel any better I went back and forth for a few days between 57" and 58" on my bed. In the end I split the difference at 57 1/2".

 

I know there different years and looks... I went with 52",10" before the tire.. the 30 " tire... and 12" after.... seems ok..

 

I like the look of the shortened beds.... I say take another couple inches off!

 

Thanks guys. Seems to be the general consensus, so 2 or 3 inches off it will be.

 

The way it is it's close to being balanced over the rear axle. If you just shorten the back too much, then it will be unbalanced and I like the look of a balanced bed. But to do that with a shorter bed you would have to shorten your wheelbase which would probably be more work than you're wanting. Look at trucks you like and see what looks good. There's a 32/34 pickup thread that has a lot of good pics. JMHO.

 

I like it shorter in front and behind the wheel. Just my opinion. About like this:

 

i borrowed a picture off the hamb here and altered it (i like the 3rd one)to get an idea of where i want to head once i start building mine.i like em shorter in the front as well,but i also like the model A tray (with a filler panel at the front)as i'm going to run a quickchange and the A tray being shallower shows it off better.(last pic also borrowed).
if you alter a few pictures and save them in sequence then you can view them one straight after the other and it gives you a real good idea on the difference.ie click on the below pictures,load them all and then click through them quick,the changes become more obvious(mainly the 2nd and 3rd pics)
