Very cool project man, can't wait to see it finished.

Stupid question from someone who never got to play with these: How do you keep the motors in sync? Or is that not an issue with them both driving a common shaft?

Thanks for all the kind words. But I didn't know this was going to be considered "inappropriate". I figured It would be a cool old skool project that HAMBers would appreciate. It's not a car, but I'm sure you folks have done other "non-car" project threads (restoring old shop tools, garage refigerators, etc.).

I have a wife and three kids (translation-no money). My shop is one stall of a two stall garage, and I grew up on minibikes and go karts. All reasons why I'm doing this.

I'll let the moderators decide if its HAMB-worthy. In the meantime, I'm gonna keep the posts comin!

Iceberg-yes, a live axle (solid shaft). Once those clutches lock up, the motors are singin' turn-for-turn.

  3. Great thread. Any way you look at it; its a quality restoration of a vintage ride. Subscribed.

Casey, that was a stand up first class response to your earlier comments. Very nice to jump back on here tonight and see that.

    Happy Motoring, ALL!

Awesome! I'm in the middle of restoring a Rupp Lancer GT kart for my young daughter. This is where I started too, with mini-bikes and karts, so I'm digging this build.

    Mine was prepped for primer/paint tomorrow. Here's a "before" shot of it;

Heres my original, unrestored 1963 Dart Grand Prix with McCulloch motor. If you're interested, all the original Rupp tooling is owned by Robron, Inc. (Robert Stanton), and is available if anyone wants to do an authentic restoration. Google "Vintage Karts" for more info.

    HG Wells has it right!

It is a perfect project to learn a lot of important skills for a bigger project in the future.

Cant speak for any of the other Mods, but I like it...

Those tires look like a competely different size and width compared to the modern ones.

    Can you still get those?

Or do you have to choose between running on old tires or changing it to modern?

This outfit shows "fun kart" tires that look pretty much like to oldies.

First class work! I love karts anyway. Even Casey came around. Takes character to admit you have been an asshole. I have had many character building experiences myself and can sympathize. :)

I wondered this as well. Those square sidewall tires look SO good on the early karts.

ALRIGHT ALRIGHT I take back my comment too. I guess listening to peoples posts and opinions has made me realize that this is much more on topic than a lot of other threads on here, and it is a pretty cool project... lets just think of it as a mini hot rod? haha just kidding

It might be cool to really finish one of these up with chrome and metal flake and whatnot... just a thought

I can't wait to see your kart finished and running. Perhaps you'll post a video? I think there's a lot of us who started out with go-kart of some sort. I had a Bug Wasp with a West Bend 820 when I was a kid. Good luck with your build!

Thanks again for all the kind words! I really appreciate it. Especially the fabrication complements. However, this is my 1st metal fabrication project, ever. I took a 12 week night class to learn to weld and that's it. So if you see anything suspect, let me know.

I've been a woodworker for 20 years and I find that the skills I learned working with wood translate to metal as well. Measure twice, cut once. Take your time. Use the right tools (as much as you can). Fix your screwups before you continue, etc.

Sweet Lancer! I bought one last year and flipped it on eBay. Didn't know what that support from the steering hoop to the front porch was-but as I see on yours it holds the Nassau panel.

Nice Dart. Robert was the contact I was referring to regarding scoring a new motor mount. He's pretty much retired now. Doesn't do alot of kart stuff. I'd be nice to score all of his original Rupp tooling though. But nowadays with CNC benders, you can reproduce these frames with no tooling.

Nope. Both the wheels and tires are new. Azusa Engineering is still in business making kart parts. These are their Tri-Star wheels. Tires are Cheng Shin repops.

WARNING-NEVER RUN NEWER STYLE "STICKY" KART SLICKS ON A VINTAGE, ONE-PIECE FRAME! Those tires are designed for newer, sidewinder 2-piece frames. The new frames are designed to flex to compensate for track conditions. If you put sticky tires on rigid one-piece frames, it is a recipe for disaster. Always run hard compound tires with rigid frames.

Too much traction + rigid frame=kart endo.

Will most undoubtedly be posting some vids. Hopefully I'll be getting footage of the twin LBs' initial fire-up soon!

I don't remember picking up a hot rod mag from late 50s early 60s that didn't have something about Go Karts or mini bikes Hot Rod ran monthly sections on them. After all they are miniature hot rods and a bunch of us started there

You are the madman of go karts, and I mean that in the most complimentary way. :D Very cool project and you are really not taking the easy way out building it.

Mini bikes and go karts are just fun to build. Last winter I got the bug to build an old school mini bike and after finding a bare frame on CL I had a blast ordering parts and fixing it up. It was the most fun I have had building something in a long time. But after taking one spin around the block I realized I am not 12 any more and if I take a dump at my age the outcome wouldn't be good. So I sold it to some kid who couldn't wait to get home and race his buddies on their mini bikes. You shoulda seen the smile on his face when his Dad said he could buy it. :D

Keep up the posts, this one is fun to watch.

    Don
