I am guessing this is a 250. It's in a 67 Chevy II. I just want to make sure before I pull it and pay. I wouldn't mind a 230 but I had to leave the yard and didn't get any numbers off of it.
The head off of a 194 is worth getting to up the compression in a 230/250. As for the 194-I had a one that wouldn't pull a sick woman off the pot.
x2. Or to up compression on a 292 as well. 194 heads are getting harder to come by in the 6 cylinder world.
My 48 had one of those in it when I bought it in 1973. They aren't very fast but a good one runs forever. I'd sure like to have one of those heads for my 292 to get more pop out of it.
The ONLY 194 CID head to get/use is the casting number 3864883 head, and it has 60CC combustion chambers. Mill it .060, and on a stock, dished piston 250 CID it'll bump the CR to 10:1. There are other 194 heads out there that don't accomplish the same thing because of larger chambers. Butch/56sedandelivery.
Thanks for the response Butch. I was figuring a Hamber could benefit from it. Soon as i can run out there again and post the head numbers. The engine number stamped by the distributor is T06I40K. Don't know if anyone can decipher what's need without the vin, but there you go.
That'll be a 230 or 250, I think. It has a coolant temp sensor in the head, I don't think the 194 heads had that. I have a 194 head I'm holding onto till I build my 292. Will have to check Leo's book, but I think the 194 chamber is small enough that it shrouds larger valves. Would definitely need hardened exhaust seats. Edit: If you can get casting numbers off it, there are lists on the Inliners International site that'll tell you what it is for sure.
63chevyII I am not sure what they want for just the head. When I was there they wanted a couple of hundred for the whole engine. If it's something you need, I can see if they will sell just the head. Maybe that and a few bucs for gas and shipping, and she's yours.
Thanks for the offer, but I don't need it. I was just wondering what a good price for one is. I have 3 or 4 of them in my garage
You must have missed the 250 and 292 dyno tests done on Inliners a few years back with all the cylinder head swaps(over 200 dyno pulls combined). The larger chamber heads(70cc +) always made more HP than the 194 head made with all else being the same on every combo we tested. The 194 head was one of those "urban legends" we wanted to prove or disprove once and for all, and was found to be just that....a myth! You do gain compression only, but loose HP and torque, so what is the point in doing the swap.
do you have a link to these tests. going to build a 250 would like to get as much info as i can.looking for econo more then speed.
I tried to post a link but it wouldn't cooperate. You can do a search on Inliners for "Dyno day for a 250" and find it pretty easily. There are also several YouTube dyno videos as well, just search Dyno 250 Chevy. 290 HP was reached N/A, and then a budget turbo setup was installed and got over 350 HP with only 5 psi of boost. There is also an earlier thread of us doing a 292 dyno session. Just use the search words "292 Dyno Day, Need Help" and you should find it.
