Falconred, it would have to be 84. That was my last year with ASA. I went to work for NHRA at IRP at the start of 1985. Thanks for the photo. The goggles, incidentally, were because I got hit by a rock at Winchester two weeks before and it broke my glasses. I only had one pair left at that point.

In my 10 years or so in a flagstand I would never get up there without safety glasses on! It just wasn't worth losing an eye over. Of course I flagged on dirt tracks and there was lots of stuff in the air!

Thanks for the comment, jrose7004. I always had my glasses made with safety lenses for the same reason. I worked dirt a lot in the 60s and 70s. The incident at Winchester was the first time I actually got a pair broken, and I was VERY glad I had taken that precaution.

That Winchester incident happened in practice, and after I came down before qualifying, and before I changed to my second pair, Butch Miller asked me if I could see out of that right lens. I said, "Yeah, I can see about six of you."

Good stuff, Zoera! These are the cars I can remember from the time I first started attending races as a pre-teen in the late 40s.

    A few more...

Cleveland Speedway is under a black cloud right now.... The surrounding car dealers are wanting the red dust off the cars on monday mornings. We can only hope that someone will step up and keep this speedway alive.

I knew Donnie very well and would love to have some of his old pics, sadly I do not. I'd love to see some. I got a 460 from him right before he passed.

I been going to Eldora since I was a kid. I've seen plenty a bad wrecks there. Every class at that place is fast. I've seen a fair amount of guys over the years tow past that track to race elsewhere because of the speeds.

MY grandfather, Melvin Joseph, actually bought this car at the sale. He kept it for a couple of years and then sold it. Always wondered where it ended up!

Year old post, I know, but I still have a bunch of old RPM photos. Posted several here. Lots of other pics from Hales here too.

Thanks, Copley! I didn't have that middle pic. That's pre-beard, so it has to be in the 60s. In the photo of Benny you can see one of the two flagstands that hung on the grandstand roof supports at Salem. This was the one toward Turn 4, where ARCA put the scoring clock, and sometimes photographers would use it. The flagman used the other one, toward Turn 1. The ladder was on the other side. It was a real adventure climbing up slots in the wall and then up the ladder to those things. Getting out was easier. First thing you did before going all the way in was to check for a wasp nest. I carried a can of wasp killer with me.
