    Hello,

After responding to a more local online ad looking for a 292, one of your members suggested this forum would be the place to see about finding someone that could use a nice rebuilt 292. He suggested posting both in the classified & also specifically in the HA/GR forum.

I built this engine for a boat project a few years back but never found time to get it in the boat - so it's set on the engine stand in a storage bag. Now I have more time, but with the weak economy, I can buy a newer/nicer boat for a good price, so I've decided I should sell the 292, & any associated parts I've collected, to somebody that needs a good 292 for a good price.

The details are: fresh/rebuilt - 40 over 292, rebuilt head (surfaced, valve job, Elgin Z-28 valve springs), new: lifters, water pump, Accel wires, HEI with aftermarket/hotter module, Mirror black powder coated finned Al valve cover, new gaskets, etc. Have several Mercarb 2 barrels which are the common Rochester 2 barrel w/ marine style J vent - with carb rebuild kit.

I'd like to get a reasonable price from it, but as with such projects, don't expect to get nearly what's been invested in time & $. So will be a good deal for somebody that needs it. Was thinking $650.

Judging from the photos it looks like a decent engine. Appearance-wise anyway.
I wish you good luck finding a buyer. I see that you are a FNG with no introduction. Two threads, basically identical. And one post, also about the engine.

Yes, that's correct. To be upfront/honest, I joined purely to see about finding a good market that still appreciates the 'ole 6. It's a good engine, but they're no longer widely in demand, yet it's too good to sell for scrap/well used prices.

I can't really claim I'm an inline six enthusiast. Just have a boat with the Mercruiser 165 (basically, the 250 I-6) that I wanted a bit more speed out of. Then found a rebuilt 292 short block & finished building it. At the time it was a cost effective upgrade & I enjoy rebuilding engines & detailing my mechanical projects to both run & look good.

Well, I never got around to installing it the 292. And now boat prices have followed the economy & it doesn't make sense to put too much time & $ into an old boat. I think it would be a better move to simply buy a newer, more modern, & better looking/performing boat.

I spoke with a gentleman (sounded like he was probably a member here) that had advertised on the Mo-Kan Dragway forum looking for a 292. He's already found what he needed, but suggested this forum might be a good place to find folks having potential interest in the Chevy inline sixes.

The engine wasn't built for high performance (no portwork, lump ports, etc.), just built to run very reliably at sustained boating rpm.

While not truly a six enthusiast, I have used the SmithvilleD handle for many years on other forums, ebay, Craiglist, etc., so there are folks out there than know me, as well as a track record of project pictures, very solid ebay rating, etc. A search of SmithvilleD should find lots of my posts on www.thetruckstop.us, www.dieselplace.com, & my ebay record is easily found.

While I'm sure this group knows the risk in trying to guarantee an engine when selling it to a previously unknown party.

What I can do to mitigate that risk is this: For a serious buyer, I'll happily bring the engine into my warm garage & if the buyer wants, we can disassemble it for you to confirm it's exactly how I represent it to be. It will show fresh cyl wall machining cross-hatch, never run bearings, correct oil clearnaces, etc. It's been a few years since I did final assembly but I certainly have the parts receipts & should still have the main/rod bearing tolerances, etc.

Basically I think it should be worth more than scrap/used prices to the right buyer. As I'd expect you guys to have a better idea of what it's worth than I, so feel free to chime in if my price is/isn't out of line.

I've also got a marine alternator or two, starter, power steering pump, brackets, etc., that will go with the engine, as well as the Leo Santucci book "Chevrolet Inline Six-Cyliner Power Manual", that I bought to learn some of the six specifics as I've built quite a few engines, but previously no sixes beyond rebuilding tractor engines on the farm.

Also can get better pictures for a serious potential buyer. The engine is currently on a stand, bagged tight, in a storage container that didn't allow good lighting or a particularly good angle of picture.

I'll be visiting family tomorrow & Friday for the holidays, but could get better pictures after that, if anybody's interested.

Nice looking 292 motor. With the work you should be able to get $650 for it. As a basic stock rebuild it would be great in a early Chevy pickup.
Wish it was closer, would be to much to ship. Good luck.

Thanks for the price benchmark. I want to be reasonable, but not give it away.
