What type of rare cars have you had?

Although perhaps not all that rare, I did have a '57 Buick Special Riviera 2 door hardtop with 26,000 original miles, '60 Pontiac Catalina 2 door post, '62 Pontiac Grand Prix, '62 Pontiac Catalina 2 door hardtop, (2) '64 Pontiac GTO hardtops, '65 GTO hardtop, '65 GTO convertible and a '66 Pontiac Grand Prix. I've had many others of interest but many of them would be considered O/T.

EDIT: The thread did mentioned "cars"! I did have a very rare '42 Harley 45" Flathead "Civilian" model. Harley, like the auto manufacturers, didn't produce many civilian models due to the war effort. I also had a '48 Panhead which was the Pan's first year.

 

Probably not too many '29s still titled to the same person as new. With that story, definitely something to be restored to original unless it could pass as a survivor.

 

I had just the shell of a 1964 Dodge 440 hardtop;original 12.5:1 cr,aluminum front clip Max Wedge car. Best info I've found stated that less than 20 MW lightweight hardtops-both Dodge and Plymouth-were built in '64. Was laid off,no $$$,had no choice but to sell. Still makes me sick to think about it.

 

I had a 1926 oldsmobile two door sedan a few years ago that was supposed to be a low number car,original motor,top loader trans,,with muncie stamped on it and a rechromed grill shell that was real sweet,cool style.Now Id have to say the 56 lincoln mark 2 that I picked up this fall,It needs some work,but with all the literature Ive read,1 of 2500 or so made and 1 of 750 or so still known of.Although there still seems to be a few for sale all the time...

 

All I have is a 69 camaro with 14,527 miles on it same points and plugs tires ect just newer battery.origional dirt in the floors. oh I have some model a fords and a 57 mercedes 240

1953 Jaguar XK-120 Roadster, with a 390 Ford/T-10 (Hey, aluminum bodied 2 seater English Sports car with American V-8 muscle.... worked for Carroll Shelby)
1958 Pontiac Star Chief 2 door, with factory Rochester Fuel Injection (that I never could get to run right)

Right now I have a 1961 Mercury Monterey 2-door hard-top ps, pb, factory air, and get this, z-code 390 4bbl with a 3-speed on the column.

 

I have managed to pick the rarest of convertibles in my time. When I buy them, they are super rare and ultraexpensive. When I sell them they become common as an old shoe and not worth anything!

 

A few I've owned.
65 Impala SS409 4 speed convert.
67 hemi GTX 4 speed.
70 chevelle SS 396 4 gear.
70 chevelle SS 454 (LS6) and m22 4 gear.
Test drove a new 70 hemi cuda 4 gear car with my old dad. Didn't buy. Even though it was only 5250 cash.

I gave $300 for this '67 Merc Comet tudor sedan on Fort Dix, NJ in 1990. It was a 200 CID straight six with a three on the tree, Merc dog dishes and power steering. Ever drive a three on the tree with full time power steering....? it's just weird and wrong. I sold this to a guy from PA who supposedly made a drag car out of it.

 

Years ago, I found a 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham....the 4-door hardtop with the SS roof. As it turned out, it was # 7 of 498 built in 57. When new, they were $13,500.00.

It was about 1975, the car was in Southern Maryland sitting by a house and the farmer was putting tomatoes on the fender and hood to ripen in the sun. The car was 99 % complete and in good condition. I bought the car for $100.00 and the guy delivered it 90 miles to my house for $25.00.

In Hemmings, I found a phone number for the Eldorado Brougham club and called. after an explanation of where I found it etc.they told me a man from Philly would be calling me about the car. He did call and came down and bought the car for $3500.00 a week later. Not too shabby in those days, I was in the chips. I still look for that car today....it will turn up...it would be neat to see what happened to it.

My neighbor ran across a fleet option carcass here in NW Kansas. Maybe they're rare out here, because, since we are so sparsely populated, there wasn't a company needing a fleet of anything. There may have been an abundance of fleet trucks in AZ ?? Either way, maybe they don't fit the definition of rare anyway, I'm sure they made lots of them, it's just that they were mostly driven into the ground and harshly retired...That GMC website does claim that there are less then 100 surviving, but I have no idea how they could possibly verify that. I did find a Fleet Option facebook page, there's a total of 5 trucks pictured there, mine included. I've only seen one other on the HAMB. I haven't been able to find any other information on them at all....other than the fact that you see them all the time...

As for the Suburban pick up, they only made 1000 of them throughout 55-59, so they're really rare....

I had a two wheel drive 72 Blazer with a 350, 3 speed on the column and 4:11's all stock. Fastest thing in town for the first two blocks. I still have a 56 Pontiac sedan delivery and this thing.

 

I posted earlyer, but completly forgot about the 1958 Packard hawk I found in Utah...It wasn't in my hands longer then a few hours before a member of the packard owners group or what ever there club is called flew in and took it off my hands for a very fair amount....was a very cool and ugly as hell looking car.


I do appologise for the lack of pictures, they went with the car/new owner....im sure its restoration is around the net somewhere.

 

Back in the 1970's, I drove a '56 Continental Mark II as my everyday car. I bought it for $3200, drove it over 100,000 miles, and sold it for $3600. Wish I could do that today! It was a wonderful car except for the brakes. You had plenty of time to pray during an emergency stop...

 

1956 Meteor Crown Victoria (Canadian Ford). First saw it in 66 while still in HS. Guy that owned it work at the same place as my Dad. Bought it from the guy in 68 then had to sell it when I got drafted in 69. I probably miss that car more than any other I've had. To make matters worse I dont have any pics of it.

 

Reminds me of a good one, my dad was a NYSP BCI Investigator, and had an unmarked '63 Custom (stripper Galaxie) that was a "regular" PI 390 car. It got hit, and while it was in the body shop for 3 weeks, he drove the "pursuit" car- black on white '63 4-dr, bubble gum machine on top, looked like a normal patrol car, except for the big round spot of blistered paint where the carbs had backfired and caught on fire- it was a 427-8V, and had a HD 3spd w/ overdrive- every time is hear that old movie line "my top end is unlimited" I think of that one. The guys at the barracks were pi$$ed that he got to drive "the toy" for 3 weeks

I had a '35 Olds Business Coupe, neat 2-seater with suicide doors and sidemount spares, went to a new owner in Sacramento. My '62 406 car is somewhat rare as it's an XL, and both the 406 and the XL trim were mid-year added upgrades in '62. Rarest thing I've ever had is my '28 Indian Four Model 401, the first real "Indian" Four, not a rebadged Ace- they had a single-downtube frame that had vibration problems that was quickly changed to the double-downtube Model 402, so there weren't many made, "expert' opinions vary, I've seen production numbers of 225 built, and around a couple dozen left. It spent a few years hanging from the ceiling of a bar in South America

 

I don't know if it is rare or odd. I ordered a 1973 Z28 with the RALLY SPORT and TYPE LT package. Car had automatic on the column.

Car had no Z28 badges on it. The only way you knew it was a Z28 was by the wheels and motor.

I think a lot about my 71 SS BB/ 4sp Camaro, Red, black int. I wish I had saved the vin # as it had no other options except the SS 396/ 4sp F14 suspension, no PS, no posi, no consul, no stripes, stock steel wheels with dogdish hub caps, bla bla.
