California used to paint the squiggy lines before stop signs so that when driving in the fog you were aware of a cross road and stop.

Joe, having once been the lucky owner of a '62 Hawk TT coupe, this photo is very enjoyable to see!
THANKS for sharing it. RE the Gran Tourismo above, would they have been running the B-W 4-speed
or the auto? I assume the standard, and maybe it, or the clutch, broke. I do wish that more people
knew that there was nothing wrong with Studebakers at all. The company never did handle its capital
well, so as time went on it got harder and harder to keep unit costs competitive with the Big 3.

Note that these Chevys appear to have the painted trim to eliminate possible light reflection from chrome and were nicknamed "black-out" cars. Maybe they were impounded/stored in case they needed to be scrapped for their metal? In 1942 the outcome of the war was by no means certain and scrap drives were underway nationwide, as was gas and food rationing.

The 1942-45 cars black-out trim was not to eliminate reflections but to save rare precious metals which were needed in war efforts. Chrome, nickel and copper. The parts that were before war chromed were plain painted 1942-45.
I do not know the story of these cars but it is highly unlikely that brand new cars would have been taken to be scrapped for metal. More likely this could have been army inventory for staff and transportation vehicles.

  23. I imagine that would be a pretty COLD ride.

You know the swedish people they have kinky sense of humour: They run a monthly called "Fart" just to mock german cars. This issue feature was "Mercedes, girlie car"...

Just kiddin': "fart" is swedish for "speed".

Herman Munster was obviously a car guy. The little guy standing next to him in one of the pics is Frank "The Riddler" Gorshin....

  27. This discussion brings back memories of fifties when people where still afraid of being attacked. I remember we "practiced" for air raids by diving under our desks at school. Even the cars showed signs of the times.

Remember the little triangular marks on the radio dial called Conelrad station settings, user only in case of enemy attack or other emergency.

Picture of radio in my '55 Ranchwagon. See the little Triangles by the 6 and 12. You tune in there to find out why someone is bombing your ass.
