Here are some photo of the car on its first time around the block on its own power.... a family event!

After close inspections of some of the old suspension parts it was decided to also replace the rear axle. Due to some engineering problems when the car was first built the lower shock mounts got severely bent over time.

A better shape 1941 Ford rear axle was found, cleaned and detailed.

Awesome pics Rik ! Thanks for posting them!

  7. Rik, Do you know what brand and type of primer they used on the car? I really like that dark grey shade, and am thinking of doing my 46 business coupe mild custom in the same shade until I get the $ for shiny paint.
    Thanks
    Matt

The hub caps remind me of some trim rings used on 1946 and 47 Chryslers.

Here is a brochure illustration, sorry I couldn't find a photo.

The trims were white to resemble whitewall tires which were not available at the time. They were made of metal, painted white. Could they have taken a set and had them chromed?

Matt... sorry it took me a while to get back to this questions.
Steve was out of town for a couple of days with his family.

Here is the info he supplied me with.

    Brand - "DuPont"
    Name- "ChromaSurFacer"
    # -" 7707S"
    2 K -Urethane Primer-Filler
Color - Black ( look's gray in the can ) but DuPont calls it "Black"
    Our Cost- $ 186.57, Gallon
It is water resistant and with light sanding, ready for finish paint.

That and a similar product from Calnevar called Doll-Ups Chromesides have crossed my thoughts as well, but the end lip towards the tire, on these is not wide enough.

  15. Rik, is it possible that the "universal chrome bar discs" shown in the ad are 15" and the 16"s are just different enough in appearance to be the ones on the "Snooky" car - i.e. wider in the lip? ...Just thinkin' out loud.

  16. Thanks Rik, for getting the primer info for me. I think that is the exact primer i'm going to use till my 46 business coupe gets it's shiny maroon paint.

  22. I was wondering if anyone knows if Barris took any material out of the crown of the roof when they chopped it? Also was the windshield raise into roof, like Matranga's when it was chopped. In some of the pictures the crown looks lower and the windshield doesn't look as squinty as some.
    Thanks
    Matt

Don't know about the crown, but to me it doesn't like it's been flattened on Janich's car. As for the windshield, it had the A-pillars leaned back a bit. As opposite to the Mercs, the Ford pillars were more upright and it had less forehead above the windshield. Leaning them gave a larger windshield area. Paul Bragg did the same on his '41: Custom Car builder SPOTLIGHT: PAUL BRAGG It starts at post #12.

  24. Any new updates on the project?

  25. Why do you suppose he did the sleeve like that? Removal?? I cut the steering shaft down in my F1 and I just covered both sides with a sleeve and welding the piss out of it! I wonder if the keyed end would work with my Mercury wheel?? Tell him not to throw it away and send it to me. :D

    Awesome thread !!!
