For now the big Go will be Bakersfield.... I'm not sure what the future will hold as far as traveling with the car. I would love to bring it out to Mokan? We will see... Motor plate got finished up last night and we're onto the frame rails today....

Only photo I ever got to see was this B&W shot, but hydrazine would certainly cause a Chrysler to do this.
Any body ever see it used in a small block? just wondering....... Tom S.

You don't need Hydrazine to have green flames..!

GEE Sparky... I was referring to the transmission just about to go under the right slick! I thought the crank and flywheel assembly was obvious.

Not to be picky, but that is the oil pan about to go under the tire...we didn't run transmissions in fuel altereds back then...

There were two photos taken of this explosion at Lions. The one posted here is from photographer Ron Lahr.
The other famous one is by Jere Alhadeff.

"Jeeker's Ardun I stand corrected"... That's the cool part of this forum, all the things to learn. It is a fantastic photo and a bad day when you drive over your crank, oil pan or transmission. That was an expensive launch!!

That "happening" with the Magic Muffler Fiat actually happend "twice".

While at one of the 2 big shows (per year) at Bakersfield a year or two ago, one of the guys selling their old photos had the shot most see...the car with wire wheels.
Then...a few pages further in, there is another shot...of the Magic Muffler car...with the crank coming out, BUT...the picture IS different...and one of the major differences, is this shot shows the car with 18" American 12 spoke wheels in front...NOT the wire wheels.

So...either this happed twice to the same guys/car...or someone with a ton of time on their hands, did some PhotoShop work...BEFORE Photoshop was even thought of. I know photo's could be manipulated "some" back then...but not to that extent.

Some where I saw some shots of the block pieces and cleanup that followed. I do not recall if they were here or some where else on the net. Tom S.

I want to add, it's strange what an old Chrysler crankshaft go through and always still be usable and ring like a bell when you hung them up and peened them for cracks. I'd almost bet this one was still intact. You could weld on them and grind on them and do all kinds of strange things with one in a press.
The blocks however were another story. A real shame too, if only they had good big wide caps and registers like the big chev truck motor.

Didnt they fix most of the downfalls of the First Gen Hemi block with the 426 Hemi?

Jim was hard on motors, so it could have happened twice...was not hurt in on-track explosions, but was badly burned in a pit fire at Lions...happened near where we were pitted, don't know how it happened, but looked up to see him engulfed in flames...after seeing it we had no more stomach for racing so loaded up and went home...Jim had some bad scars on both arms from it...he was a real racer, never won much but a hard core guy who built his own stuff...too bad he is best known for his Lions explosion, but it was spectatular...
