ok, do you take the whole steering column out and the steering box or can i pull the steering column out and the box will stay in place for a new steering column to be adapted to it. i haven't tried to disassemble it yet just need a lil input if any one has done it thanks

Got it disassembled thanks. What a pain. The hardest thing was getting the steering wheel off.

Interesting, can you pull the box through the firewall ? (might be a plate on the floor to remove) I did a '56 & sure they will be bout the same.

invest in some wheel pullers ....they come in handy sometimes

    Mr brown,
The outer sleeve came out first then I cut the inner shaft about 2 inches away from the firewall. I'm not sure if they make a aftermarket steering box for the 54 so I've got a lot of searching to do . I kept the factory box in case I've got to adapt a new column to it.
If anyone has any info on a aftermarket box, I'm all ears
