Getting ready to do my top for the 28 and have some uneven places that will be under the padding and material. Basically a couple places where the wood doesn't quite match. I would like to fill them with something to make a smoother surface but what? I don't think putty is a good idea. How about spray foam insulation. Could shape it when done. Any other products out there you can think of? Thanks! Jim
could be tough to find something that will hold up under that top. Might be a good question for the guys over at vcca: http://vcca.org/forum/ubbthreads.php/forum_summary You should post up a few photos when you do replace the top, I need to do the same to my 28 and I'd be interested in seeing how it turns out. Many I've seen look a little "over stuffed" for lack of a better term. -Chris
Gonna try not to over stuff. That's why I would like to get it as smooth as I can before. Ordered some tonneau material to get the color I wanted. Will definitely post some picts in this thread whren I get started. Hopefully around Christmas.
Spray foam is a good choice. I used it on a 29 Plymouth and then had box liner sprayed over it in place of the fabric. Not quite the same texture, but looks good. If you use foam be sure to use 2lb foam. Definitely not 1/2 lb, it's way too soft.
Can I get the 2 lb foam in a "spray bomb". Sounds like the ticket. Like the idea of the bedliner spray though! j
Here are a couple of picts. Going pretty good. just a couple of wrinkles I can live with. Gonna try to finish up with trim and such tomorrow. Jim
Ha, I see now. You can use a hair drier to soften the vinyl a little before you tack it down. Just be careful not to burn it.
A couple of the newly painted dash and one of the upstairs bedroom. Nice to have a cooperative bride! Jim
One more thing. You may be getting wrinkles because the padding is thick on the sides. If you sand it down the wrinkles might smooth out.
I thought probably. We've been working them but no luck. They are worse in the corners. I guess that's the only place we tried the hair drier. Will try to finish tomorrow. j
And one more thing. Did you put anything between the chicken wire and the foam? If not, the chicken wire could begin to cut into the foam and really start to look bad.
The tonneau material really doesn't stretch. It's not supposed to. I looked at the pictures again and I think the thickness of the foam is your trouble. It looks like the material is going out then back in to the moulding.
The foam is 1/4 inch (described that way but really is a little thicker). Are you talking too much foam from the top down to the trim or just in the corners. Thought about the wire-foam situation too late. All is glued down now so will prob take my chances. Really not trying to stretch it, just trying to make tight. j
When the vinyl lays over the sides, it looks like you have to push it in towards the car to put on the trim. When the moulding is off, the vinyl should be laying real close to the body on the sides at the moulding.
OK I get what you mean. Will survey the situation tomorrow. May change it if we can. Thanks for spending time helping me out! Will keep posting progress. j
muslin was the filler of choice on some cars, like cotton batting. i have used body filler on wood many times,it fills really nice. i know its a little late, but thought i would mention it. the stude is considerably different, the side molding is some kind of vinyl, havent found it yet.
So my wife got the headliner sewn and we put it in the other day. It is one thing on this car that actually worked the way it was supposed to.
