Interesting reading about the steam heated molds and seeing that weird pile of raw rubber.

In the later 60s I worked at a shop that did capping. The rubber came in cardboard boxes, all with the exact weight written on it, and the width/thickness of the rubber. We used to unload a tractor trailer, box by box, at roughly 75-80 pounds each.

The molds were electric heat, I believe. Hooked to air, and super heavy walled tubes inside.

There was a tire rotater, so you could hand lay the rubber on the freshly ground casing. A spray bonder was used. Then there were tiny thin strips of raw rubber to fill in where the new rubber would not quite cover some grind marks near the sidewall.

Big bang when one of the molding tubes blew.

We had sharp hand trimmers for shaving off all the titties before they cooled.

 

Congratulations on a great, well deserved article, you guys turn out some beautiful tires. I need to make that long 35 mile trip to see your operation. Thanks again for your support of our dragster class.

VEry cool atricle! i was just looking into getting a set of cheater slicks for my T sedan. After everything i heard about them and reading this article im definitly going to be getting a set from them. Theyre building them just as hurst did back in the day, how cool is that!
