How to tell a 302 crank needs a 28oz or 50oz flexplate

    Bought a 302 Ford block = 77 at one swap meet & a 302 crankshaft at another meet with an unknown year. How do you know what flexplate or flywheel to use with a 302 crankshaft. I think 84 or 85 they started useing 50oz.

    rear main seal goes in from the outside of the engine behind the flex plate it's a 50 oz. motor and they started in the early 80's. and the cranks are easy to spot when out of the engine.. i'll see if i can get a pic of the difference on the end of the cranks..

    Early 28 oz crank is has a casting stamp of 2M or 2MA.

    It is much heavier and beefier than the 50 oz. See below.

    50 oz balance 302 was introduced in 1981.


    Late cranks have smaller counter weights in addition to the obvious smaller rear main seal hub.​
