Cool small block fords what makes them look cool and vintage ?

I've always been partial to the cast shelby "Powered by Ford" valve covers with the big round open air cleaner. But, for the more vintage look, I'd say finned valve covers with Tripower.

 

I would say the first step to building a good looking "vintage" small-block ford is grasping the idea that they werent used in hot rods in the fifties, and doing a mid-sixties up style build. Open letter Cobra valve covers, webers or a pair of small-neck afbs on the 2x4 Cobra or edelbrock intake, cast Cobra T pan ect.

 

Blue thunder re-pops the intake...

Please don't bash me for what it's in, but I wanted to make my motor look like it came from the factory in '67 like this. The valve covers are ebay stuff, painted satin black, the intake is a real Shelby unit (over the counter in the '60's) with a pair of 390's. I plumbed it with plain, non-polished brake lines and the ignition is a Ford non-vacuum advance dual point converted to Pertronix, complete with stock looking black Pertronix wires. I think to make a motor look vintage-correct means shying away from any aluminum brackets or pulleys, no braided stainless and trying to use stuff that was at least sold during the era you're shooting for. Ever see Dean Jeffries' Manta Ray? It has Cobra valve covers and Weber carbs for gawds sake! But that stuff was put on there when it was built ('65?) and should be era-correct now.

 

Doesn't take too much to make the SB Ford look good.

 

hard to make look 50,s they realy didn,t take off till the mid 60,s in hot rod,s but i never had any good luck with them but so of the people that posted on here have maded some good looking 60,s style motors with fords i always liked y-block and big block ford,s

 

I sure think this combo would look good in a hot rod.

 

Ford yblocks were "orange". The one pictured isnt truly a Ford engine color as far as I know but I could be wrong. I've seen Ford orange labeled "Ford Red" but it sure looks orange to me. If you compare the two colors side by side they both look orange but there is a notable difference.

 

I originally built the one in my avatar in 1970/1. The engine came from my rolled 65 Mustang. The intake, valve covers, Mallory dist, etc were from a buddys 66 Mustang. It's a good fit if you don't try to use the water pump mounted fan.
