:DALTERNATE CAPTION - "Bob was justifiably
    proud of the 'genuine magnesium'
    N.O.S.
12-spoke Americans that he scored on the
H.A.M.B. for his rod. Unfortunately he didn't
realize that 12-spoke American's are for the
front axle only and that he wasn't supposed
to run them in all four positions!!!

When blown up you can see the wheel spokes through the men? If it was a blur you shouldn't see the spokes.

Right on both counts. The K&K team did most of the testing on the original Daytona at the Chrysler proving ground.

As for NASCAR's requirement, my understanding is that it changed from the 1969 to 1970 model years, with a specific cutoff date. Dodge got in under the old requirement of 500 units for sale to the public. Plymouth didn't make it, and the new requirement was something like 3,000 cars or half your dealers. And I was told that's why you see more Superbirds than Daytonas.

  21. Seems I heard something a long time ago too, about NASCAR telling the MOPAR teams that - if they ran the winged cars they couldn't run the hemi's or 440s, but instead had to either run a smaller cube engine, or a non-winged production model, so as not to have an unfair advantage? Don't know if there's any truth to that - does anyone else know if that was the case?

Guys, THANKS for wading in here.:p I was in school in '69/'70, so I wasn't following NASCAR too closely then. So, I honestly don't know definitive answers to what (IMO) are pretty cool historical questions. Hell, that's one BIG thing that's cool about the HAMB: If you don't have the facts, you don't have to pretend you do!:D LOL. You can just try and keep the question on the board 'til the NASCAR knowledgeable HAMBer sees it and pipes up.

Your comments, however, spur a couple of dumb questions on my part. If the Plymouth Superbird did NOT make the deadline, wouldn't there have been little need to make a lot of those VS. Dodge Daytona? Or, maybe putting it another way: Did Plymouth, maybe, try and speed up production:confused:, thus, winding up with a lot more 'Birds than were "originally" needed to qualitfy fo NASACR comp? (In fact, I saw more Superbirds in person than I ever saw Daytonas.)
SORRY if that sounds stupid and basic, but I remember Richard running a Superbird which, I think, is in his family museum now.

Ron, I do seem to remember that Richard said baloney at some point and took the 426 Hemi drag-racing for a season.:p Is, maybe, this the situation that caused that???

That was back before the winged cars because it was an early barracuda. I want to say it was in 1966. Google "43 Jr." to find it.

IIRC it got away from RP and a child was killed, ending his desire for drag racing.

Also try looking at http://wwnboa.com/ for more info on the aero cars in NASCAR.

Wow, Bob. To say the least, THAT answered my last question. And I THANK you! The HAMB is awesome!

    (BTW, that's a '65 Barrracda, isn't it?)
