The intake started out as an Offenhaeuser tri power. Don Hampton converted it. I furnished a 4-71 blower core that he rebuilt. Don also supplied all of the drive parts , hardware and gaskets. Tim
And I do think Lee Petty won the '54 Grand National Cup with a Royal or Coronet 241 Hemi, both rated at 150-horse at 4,400.
Very cool on building the little HEMI. I suspect there is even more available with some tuning and you got the 427 hp with only 10 lbs boost.
In the Tex Smith book he says it was a 331 out of a '54 NYer. He said he hurt the crank & "borrowed" a '51 331 from a buddy's car, probably what you were thinking of.
Don is great guy to deal with.Very patient with my questions on the phone. He even told me when I sent the blower to him to send my Hilborn injector too. He'd drop it off at their place for a rebuild "no problem". I don't know how much power is left in this combination without a bottom end girdle. A roller cam and rockers would make me breathe easier when it's making that power! I've gotta figure out how to post video first. It'll be down the road a bit. There's more blower sound then exhaust noise. The neighbors said it was too damn loud! Tim
Here's '41z ugly, older sister a '39 Willys P/U that is at my shop, I could ask the owner if it's available and if so put the 2 of you together if there is any interest? Can't promise a thing but it is close to you!
and to think I was being sneaky getting a Dodge 270 and 241 truck poly's to go with my LRR's and D500 hemi's....got to make something work
After seeing that picture now I know I really need to finish my motor. I have a performance cam and lifters, just need carbs, pulleys and machine work finished.
That's a stout little engine. I just wonder how much the crankshaft will take, those little journals make me nervous.
With that kind of horsepower, they are probably going to use it in an application where longevity is not the goal.
has anyone put a turbo on a 241? just wondering, i have a 241 for my model a truck and have been thinking of 1 or 2 turbos for it would look good. can't seem to find any of these blower manifolds anywheres.
I just picked up a 241 punched to a 270. don't know if i got a good deal or not but its going in my 30 model a coupe project. It has the original crank, new pistons, aftermarket springs and valves,.400" cam, 8to1 compression, weidon intake and 4 97's and a malory dual point dist. It is suppose to be fresh rebuid. Does this info seem like it will work good? I don't know alot about these motors been on here trying to learn. Engine is my avatar. thanks for any info!
The "problem" area is the cranks, adding a harmonic balancer would be the cure on a natural asperated build, but I don't think I'd put a blower/turbo on one. Personally a damper/balancer & 9 or so to 1 pistons(verified, the OEM C/R is listed @ 7.1:1 but @ least one was measured @ an actuall 6.19) & the usuall build stuff should be a perfectly fine engine.
Any aluminum manifold can be made to work. Currently, Offy offers a 1x4 and a 2x2....I would use the 2x2. Contact dmarv for Offenhauser stuff then talk with TRWaters for the machine work. If you are happy with the cash/engine exchange then you got a good deal... Have you verified the overbore by comparing the ID code to the finished bore? I am unaware of any 8:1 pistons on the market, where did this number come from? Does it look fresh? What is a weidon intake? Pics? .
A 241 punched to 259-260, depending on which way you were facing at birth, is pretty common. 270 seems a little big.
