I remember wrestling with the headliner kit I bought for my 1950 Plymouth fastback. It was a real bitch and I vowed Never Again! Well, after seeing how well yours went, I can see me tackling the next one. Never say never, right? Well done!
OK Raf, tell the truth, you really are an upholstery guy, right? I sewed a bit in the military, parachute rigger, and I can appreciate those seam lines. Looks fantastic, great looking kids, and thanks for your service.
Thumbs up from here! Beats the old angel hair, or whatever other color fur, temporary 'liners. Great execution too. I bookmarked it cause theres a few things that aint clear to me, but i think i will use this tech when i'll have to do mine fer good.
Good job, where exactly do you have to sew though and do you just spray the inside of the roof and then press the headliner on till it sticks? I've got a non-hamb car I need to replace the headliner, but it doesn't have bows. Any suggestions on a good spray or liquid to use to hold up the material?

Cool mang, I think I understand. In this pic of your old one, it appears that the bows slide into a seperate piece of material sewn onto the headliner. If I understand correctly, you just did 1" tall folds in the headliner? Then trimmed those folds off for the bows to poke out? That sounds WAY to easy LOL
MAH MAN!! Bingo! you hit it on the head. i guess i could have been a bit more clear. when you cut the hole for the bow to poke thru make sure you give yourself some room on the edges to pull the material tight and not contact the mount points of the bows or else the headliner will look bunched up at the edges. i just cut a hole for the bow to poke thru i didnt want to risk cutting the headliner. thank you all for the compliments. you are all too kind. just take 'er easy and youll be done in no time. all in all from sewing to finish it took about 6 hrs. The Continental: yes you are partially correct, when i was a kid i saw the upholsterer make a headliner for my moms 83 buick. i later made one for my sisters car. take the headliner out, then scrape ALL of the residual foam off of it. either get a cheapie spray gun or a undercoating type of gun and fill it with contact cement and commence to spraying. if not you can apply it with cheap bristle brushes. let it start to tack and press the new material into place, fold a few inches over the lip and re install. you can buy the headliner material from the upholsterers. i guess growing up poor did have it's advantages...LOL if you all have any questions let me know and ill answer the best i can. great look'n job.... i need a headliner in my 50. iv'e got the bows, but no headliner. for $25 bucks i think i'll give it a try myself thanks for your service, enjoy the rest of your time off....
Ok, so i know i wasn't the most clear when explaining this. so while i was sewing some pillow cases for the kids (damn i feel like a homo admitting that ) i took the time to further explain what i did. they say a picture is worth a thousand words...sooooooo... I said just fold the material where you want the bow to go thru and sew as straight as you can. i originally said i placed the material on the 1'' line, my mistake. i meant the 5/8'' line. with the edge lined up with the mark, there is should be around an inch. theory behind that is because even though it says 5/8'' we all know men can't sew straight . good luck fellas.
