Randy: The small block car that ran N/SS were Only Original Factory 65 BFX small block (289 type engine) Comets. NO CLONES. But they couldn't race them with the NMCA only big block cars NO 460 type Ford or 454 type Chevys. The class was was for cars that ran Super Stock or AFX in the early sixties! From 1960 to 1967!! Mustangs and Camaro's were not allowed in the class except AFX 427 factory Mustangs. Also index deal in 9.50 10.00 10.50 and so on, not bracket Racing! Remember I am talking the old days. Maybe " Dennis K " may have more info on this subject? ~~~~~~~AFX DAVE~~~~~~~~

I always wondered the same thing.

In my case I just assumed that all those BB cars did not want to get showed up by a mid ten second 289 iron headed 400 CFM 45 year old carb equipped 65 Mustang LOL :D

Steve;that looks like Fast Eddie got into the moon shine a little early!!!He does make great engine sounds though!!!! Randy;the reason I got was that the Super Stock Fords of that era had the FE in them.I have a low 10 second small block powered Comet,it is quicker than many N/SS cars but at least the Mid West N/SS association follows their own rules. The A/FX group out here can be a little "loose" on their rules, but Mustangs must use a FE to compete out here. There were 5 small block Ford powered cars at the Reunion,4 of us made the show[quick 16].American Nostalgia West,Dave Franklin's group, has a website that lists the rules and has his contact info. Steve;I think it may have been caused by an overdose of Fords in A/FX at the Reunion!!! That and some good shine!!!! ROY.

I for one am happy that the A/FX group out here keeps a close watch on the rules, in some areas, but lets loose on a few others. The area of small blocks is one of them. I cannot say that I am one to have competitive times to compare with that of the rest of the field, but when allowed, they let me compete with them, and if its not a quick sixteen format, allow me to go through eliminations. Hell, I won one event earlier this summer!!! And had the slowest car in the field!! But, I do know that I need to bring the performance of my ride to their minimum times in order to keep a level playing field, and am working on it. I think our group on the West Coast is more into the look, and vibe of the cars competing, as well as some good match-ups, which we definately had at the Reunion.

Class Description

Nostalgia Super Stock is an index-style foot brake only class for the year models, body
styles, and engine combinations, which accurately represent those cars, which raced in
the A/FX and Super Stock classes of the ’60s. Certain exceptions in the authenticity of
these cars will be allowed. Among those exceptions, but not limited to, are factors
concerning safety, equality in performance, availability, and durability. Classification will
be based on a visual inspection and an e.t. range. No modifications, which alter the car
from factory stock, are permitted unless they are specifically allowed in these rules.
Sandbagging, excessive braking near the finish line or excessive mph for a given e.t. is
subject to result in a disqualification. Nostalgia Super Stock is an all run field, and will
compete on an NHRA Sportsman type ladder. The class will qualify by elapsed time
closest to index, be paired according to qualifying positions, and then advance to
eliminations. All qualifiers in Nostalgia Super Stock must have a valid elapsed time
recorded to be placed into eliminator competition. Nostalgia Super Stock racing will
be conducted at all drag racing events (see race schedule).

A/FX Dave,
I am very aware of what happend in the day. Before I could drive I was a "grunt" for Dyno Don (rip) I got a couple sets of A/FX 31 spline axles from Tommy Grove when I hung around with him and a pair of Kelsey Hays aluminum "cheater" disc brake calipers from Doug Nash. I was helping Tommy Grove in '68 when he blew up the '66 long nose car at OCIR - 8.00 @ 200 mph on hydrazine. He was racing Ray Alley in the Engine Masters Baracuda. The torque convertor blew up.
Maybe I'll do a clone of the old Charlie Horse car Tommy had. It was a wedge. I can put my SK medium riser heads to some use.
NO CHANCE on cutting up the Shelby ( cover car Car Craft July '77 and Modified Mustangs Feb 2011 with a nice article in case your interested).
Thanks for the info on NMCA.

There was an old '32 or so roadster that had a Chrysler 392 type hemi in the bucket (drivers compartment) and the driver sat in the engine compartment with the stock type hood, sides and top, and looked through the grill shell which had plexiglass in place of the grill.

Randy:
About those Ford Factory 31 spline axles! I broke one axle at Norwalk, Ohio in 1992 with a Detroit Locker in a BFX 289ci 271hp Comet. Everything I use is now Mark Williams 35 Spline with 11/16 wheel studs and MW spool with a N-case with big bearing pinion retainer MW yokes and 13.50 U joints.
P.S. Guys don't use a spool with factory stock axles!!! They will brake sooner or later. Randy those SK medium riser are great and hard to find.
I have to find that Car Craft July 77, It's put away in the (Black Hole) with the the other old crap. ~~~~~~~~AFX DAVE~~~~~~~~
