  18. Wow Bruice! The chevy grill really fitted like "the hand in the glove" on your car. It's way more fluid with your build then the cal-custom grill was! :D
    Keep it up!

The Grandpa Car is already in here, but I love ANY excuse to share....

These pics are from over the summer.

No more progress yet really - I'm debating frenching the headlights and taillights and maybe adding a sunken antenna. I have NO welding skills, but that's never stopped anyone before, really.

Hey CuznBrucie. Correct me if I’m wrong but it looks like you and I have the same smooth grille. My problem is that the grille doesn’t fit a stock 51 grille opening contrary to what the less than honest guy told me in an auction purchase a couple of years ago. I’ve been hunting a smooth grille for my shoebox for a long time and passed a never mounted like new one at the big on-line auction years ago because I thought it was too expensive. Well a couple of years ago on a different auction I paid about $150 more than what I thought was too expensive earlier for another never mounted like new smooth grille for a 51. The guy said he changed his mind and decided to re-chrome his original grille. He even held the new grille up to his 51 parts car for a photo. Of course the stock grille ends were missing so it was hard to tell what was going on & I’ve never seen one of these for real.

Long story short, after being high bidder for a couple of go-rounds but not meeting his reserve, I finally made a deal with him and bought the grille about 6 months later. It was another year or so when I tried to mount my new grille that I found out it was not for a 51 Ford. AND he had two 51 fords so he had to know the truth! Or else he was just stupid.
    <O:p
It looks like my grille and maybe yours is for a 49-51 Merc. When the grille is mounted in my opening, it is way too pointed for the front of the car (sticks out too far) and the lines don’t blend into the stock grill bar ends. On top of that, the ends don’t hide behind the grill ends and that looks like what I see in your photos. The ends of the grille are slightly curved which is what I think the grille surround is like on a Merc. The end profile is too squished compared to the stock grille ends to make the fitment even look worse. Maybe some of you 40-50 Merc owners could chime in here.
    <O:p
The green shoebox is an online photo of the style of smooth grille I was after. Also, below there is a page from an old Gene Winfield catalog from Rik Hoving’s site advertising grilles for 49-50 Mercs. It’s probably hard to tell from the photo but it looks like the curved ends blend into the Merc surround.
    <O:p
Your 54 grille looks good. If things don’t work out for my smooth grille I might go that route. I also have a stainless grill bar from a 52 Dodge that I thought about using but would rather find a Gene Winfield or Cal Custom one that would be a direct bolt-in since my car is finished. Now it looks like both of us have grilles for sale. I would just like to make sure of what I have so I don’t screw the next guy like the seller did to me. Of course someone re-working the surround or even putting in a Merc surround could use mine but it definitely isn’t a bolt in replacement for the stock grille.
    <O:p
Is your 54 & extra teeth a reproduction? If so, who did you get it from?
    <O:p
My convertible was also born a Vickie. Long story there too about another less than honest seller.
